Basic Information
Basic Information
Age: 60
Canon or OC?: OC (Raoul Christophe de Chagny's butler and servant)
[/ul]
Appearance
Body type: Medium build. He is 60 years old and so is not as muscular as he once was, but still, because of some of the constant walking and moderately heavy work he does, keeps in relatively good shape. Also goes on long walks on his off time.
Eye color: Blue. His eyes are prominent and friendly but do not miss a thing. He wears spectacles to read.
Wardrobe: In his position as the de Chagny butler, for formal occasions, Alfred wears formal attire, a black tail coat with a waistcoat and black tie; white shirt with wing collar. When he is attending to the family, his attire, while still in excellent taste, may be a bit more informal, a jacket in black, grey, brown or dark blue with matching waistcoat and trousers, and a contrasting or matching ascot, possibly a tie. When he is on his off time, Alfred eschews the tie or ascot and coat and wears his shirt open at the neck for comfort. He may wear a dressing gown, or just a suit with a casual jacket.
General Appearance: Alfred is tall and his demeanour is quiet, as befits his station. He has close cropped curly grey hair, which used to be blond. It is now thinning a bit. He has friendly blue eyes and a ready smile. He has the normal lines about his eyes and mouth of a 60 year-old man and the flesh about his chin and neck sags a bit from age. Alfred has a fairly fast stride when on the walks he enjoys so much. In the house, he walks quietly and moves unobtrusively, so as not to disturb the members of the household as he does his work.

Personality
Alfred speaks French well, albeit with an British accent. He normally speaks English with the young Vicomte, as he and Elizabeth taught the boy to speak it ever since he learned to talk and he now speaks English and French as if they were both his first language.
Alfred enjoys being young de Chagny's servant, for he has learned the young man's ways and can anticipate his needs before he has to ask. Alfred has been a valet, a butler and a general servant to de Chagny. But he has been a teacher to the young man, most of all. Certainly the boy was provided with tutors, but Alfred taught him about life and all the fascinating things that his tutors didn't have time for.
Alfred is a good Anglican and attends high church regularly. In the small town of Perros-Girec where there was no Anglican church available, he attended Mass with his Roman Catholic friend, Juliette. Alfred is a firm believer in God, the Bible and the afterlife.
Likes: Alfred enjoys his time off. He has a small suite of rooms in the de Chagny mansion and and it contains his prized possession, his violin. He enjoys playing it more than anything. He also has a small collection of antique guns and weapons from the turn of the last century. He also knows how to shoot a revolver, of which he owns several of more modern vintage. He would never hesitate to shoot in defense of young de Chagny. Alfred also likes to read; he is a well-read and informed man. He often takes long walks by himself or with his secret girlfriend about whom he will not divulge any details even to Raoul Christophe, who has seen them walking together. It is a lady the never-married Alfred has been courting for some time, but he will not say anything about it unless there would be a marriage in the future. Alfred also enjoys playing chess with the young Vicomte.
Hobbies:
1. Taking long walks
2. Playing his violin
3. Going to the opera
4. Playing chess
Dislikes: Alfred dislikes anyone who is arrogant, pretentious, haughty, pompous or overbearing. He has met a lot of those types in his years as a servant. Sometimes he has wished to drop a cup of hot tea down the back of their collars, but of course he would never do that. But it was tempting. Of course it would be a waste of a good cup of tea. Alfred also dislikes being treated badly, which the young Vicomte has never done, and neither had his father. He has been treated badly sometimes, simply because he was a servant and as if he were not a person or just “no account” because of his station in life, he cannot complain, but it angers him none the less.
Habits: Alfred has the habit of taking a daily walk if possible, although sometimes because of family functions it is not possible to do this on a daily basis. Alfred is meticulous about where things should be and he can find anything immediately because of that. Alfred always cleans up after himself and everyone else, of course that is part of his job, but even when not working, he has a habit of doing so. Alfred is obsessive about keeping things clean and in order. He gets a bit annoyed with people who are messy.
Dreams and Goals: Alfred dreams of marrying the French lady he had been courting, Juliette. He dreams of retiring to a small cottage on the seashore and having a sailboat to take him and his lady friend on some lovely day trips on the water. Alfred strives to be the best he can at his job. He strives to get along with everyone.
Strengths:
1. Complete devotion to his employer
2. Never divulging any secrets.
3. Sense of humour
4. His ability to turn anything into an interesting story
5. His gentleness and kindness
Weaknesses:
1. His dislike for pretentious people
2. Obsessively keeping things in order to the point where it may irritate others
3. Sometimes, because of the closeness of himself and his former charge, he becomes a bit blunt with the young man
Fears:
1. Letting down the young Vicomte in some way
2. Aging and losing the ability to work and do the things he loves to do
3. Birds - he was attacked by a raven once.
4. Demons and losing his soul in the afterlife.

Brother: Frank, (died as a child)
Lady Friend: Juliette Breton, 55, with whom he steps out on a walk along the seashore or a dinner at the local bistro. He is very closed-mouthed about her.
History:
Alfred Nigel Worthington was born 14 March, 1822. Alfred's parents were not of high rank and Nigel ran a small local pub in the little English town that the Worthingtons had lived in for generations. Alfred had an older brother, Frank and a younger sister, Mabel, both of whom had died of dyphtheria when they were very young. Alfred and another younger sister, Beatrice, survived the illness.
Nigel and Lettie were good and kind parents. They were unusual in that they wanted the children to have a formal education and to learn to speak the Queen's English so that they would speak well and find positions with a bit of prestige. The Worthingtons scraped and saved every penny so their children could have this good education.
Alfred grew up around the towns people and was rather the entrepreneur when it came to making a bit of extra money for the family. But he aspired for better things, and although he could hardly expect to rise above his station, he procured a position of a proper English butler for several families. He worked for quite some years in England and enjoyed the atmosphere of the beautiful manor homes.
Then Alfred made a trip to Paris and enjoyed a lovely holiday there. He had saved quite a bit of money and had planned for this trip to be a tour of the northwestern parts of France, but as turned out, Alfred fell in love with a small seaside village on the west coast of France called Perros-Girec. It was a place where many wealthy families came for a seaside holiday. Alfred had been about to leave for England the following day when he heard talk that the Comte de Chagny, a wealthy French nobleman in the area was looking for a butler and servant to join his household. The nobleman, Comte Philbert de Chagny, had recently lost his wife and needed help running the household. Alfred wondered. He was 48 years old...would he want to start out in a new position? On a whim, he went to see the Comte de Chagny who was impressed with his credentials and hired him on the spot. Alfred learned that the Comte had a baby son named Raoul and the Comtesse had died in childbirth. Thrilled with the new opportunity, Alfred sailed for home and set things right with his old employer, packed his things and arrived shortly back in Perros-Girec.
Alfred found the Comte a bit distant. He was obsessed with the death of his wife and paid little attention to his son Raoul. There was an older son, Phillippe, 20 years older than Raoul, whom Alfred did not see very much. Phillippe had an estate in the countryside.
Alfred of course was hired to be a servant to the whole family, but he grew close to the young Vicomte Raoul. The boy was shy and Alfred felt fatherly toward him. Although Elizabeth, an English governess had charge of the young boy, Raoul often went off to find Alfred and talk to him. Alfred always had a listening ear, a smile and a comforting word for the shy child. Alfred was an excellent story teller and could weave stories of far off lands and adventures, both real and imagined for the boy. Alfred taught him many things too and Raoul accompanied Alfred on some of his daily walks.
Then came the sad day that news of Comte Philbert's death arrived at the manor and Alfred again comforted the 12 year old boy and held him as he cried. Never having married or had children, Alfred felt as if Raoul were his son indeed after the Comte passed away. They grew closer even as the boy grew more shy of others. Of course being only a hired servant, Alfred knew his place. And yet that line was stepped over time and time again as the young boy reached out to Alfred.
Bringing up the boy was now the Comte Phillippe's job. When he was at home though, he was never far from Alfred. Alfred took the boy swimming and taught him to play chess. One day, at the beach, the governess watched as the young Raoul retrieved a red scarf for a pretty little girl who had let the wind blow it away from her. Elizabeth related the story to Alfred later and he smiled at the boy's gallantry. He would grow up to be a fine man. Alfred didn't know at the time that this girl would play a larger role in the Vicomte's future life than anyone could imagine.
At age 16, the young Vicomte left home to join the French Navy. He was gone for five years and Alfred missed him greatly. When the young and now tall Vicomte returned home again, Phillippe welcomed him and seemed proud of him. Alfred stood in the background, proud of the young man also.
Asked by the young Vicomte to come with him as his personal servant to his chateau outside of Paris, Alfred went willingly. Raoul became a patron of the Opéra Populaire and oft times gave Alfred tickets to various operas. Alfred missed Juliette greatly, but they corresponded by letter and he sent her train fare several times so she could join him at the opera.

Alfred had had an exhausting previous day. Master Raoul and his brother Phillippe had hosted a small dinner at the estate and Alfred oversaw everything. The guests were notoriously messy, a wine spill here, a dropped piece of cake, butter on the tablecloth...you would think they were children! he thought.
Alfred knew it could wait until tomorrow morning, and cook would help, but he would probably just toss and turn all night knowing the mess was not cleaned. He sat down for a moment after taking off his tail coat and rolling up his sleeves. Then he started in again cleaning. Finally he was satisfied that everything was quite in order.
Alfred fell asleep quickly and in the morning felt refreshed after only a few hours sleep. Today was his day off and he decided to take one of his usual walks. He put on his coat and hat and took his umbrella just in case the weather might turn inclement. The sun was behind some clouds and it looked a bit like rain. Alfred walked in his usual direction, but somehow, he must have made a wrong turn. He frowned. It was not like him to do so. He stopped at the edge of a graveyard. There was a mausoleum and several gravestones. It looked like a family plot. A distance away was a large manor house and in between a beautiful garden with a gazebo. Alfred wondered if he were more tired than he had thought from the previous day. He couldn't quite remember or understand how he had come here. He had been walking...
Alfred walked closer to the huge mansion. It looked almost like a castle. He was puzzled. He thought he had walked this way almost every day since he had come to the young Vicomte's chateau. He looked to his left and saw in the near distance the beginning of a wooded area that stretched for possibly miles. He knew he hadn't come in through the woods. But he couldn't remember how he had gotten here...
Alfred walked over to the house and opened the door that led from the garden. He stood a moment in the unfamiliar entrance way and wondered which way to go to find someone who could tell him what this place was and how to leave without going through the woods...
