Will couldn't eat.
It was one of the things that frustrated the hell out of him and made him want to kill someone just so they could experience the horrible sight of someone eating while they themselves couldn't with him. Of course, they were simply angry thoughts, he never would do that, but he hated how they could and he couldn't. It was pure jealously and he knew it.
And yet, he still tortured himself by standing in the kitchen sometimes.
He wasn't sure why he did this to himself. But he did, and it was ridiculous. Eating was a joy in life, a privilege. It's hard to comprehend missing something until you couldn't do it. Will had tried not to take the food he was given and never had to work for to granted while he was alive, but as an adult, the itch that he indeed had amplified tenfold. Not eating was awful.
He was embarrassed of some of the other ghosts, who for some reason could. They were so human, it wasn't fair. Eating was human. So was sleeping, something he also could not do. Was it because he was the first one? Or because he didn't deserve it for what he'd done in life? He didn't know. But it was still awful.
Still, he tried not to be frustrated when he watched them eat, or looking at the food in the cupboards of the kitchen, or watched the mice stealing crumbs off the ground.
It was night-time, and Will also moved around most at night, because it was when the characters slept. While he loved them dearly and wanted to protect them best he could, he didn't find talking to them the most enjoyable experience, as the majority of them either hated him, were angry at him, or were terrified of him. They called him a devil, or a monster. Their words would have made him cry, if he could cry.
All those human needs, ripped away with death. And the church had told him eternal life after death was peaceful.
He was quite strong today, almost a completely corporeal being. It was nice, to be able to lift, to touch. He could even try to eat, and would put thing in his mouth and longingly wish to swallow them. But he knew it was pointless. He was solid, but that was all. His nerves were nonexistent, and if something went down his throat, it would not be digested. It would simply stay there until he became weaker and fall to the ground. It was like being a brick wall.
But he tried not to be in an awful mood while he sat on the kitchen counter, staring longingly at a basket of fruit and wishing he could drool at the sight of them. He hated being dead, it wasn't fair. He'd say Life isn't fair, but he was't even in life.

Erik was hungry. He was rarely hungry, but for some reason tonight he was. He hadn't really noticed until he got a bit of a pang in his stomach and he realized it had been several days since he had arrived and he had not eaten once. He had planned a lovely dinner for Christine and himself after her abduction, and that had gone, oh, so wrong. Not the dinner, that hadn't even come close to happening. But the pulling off of his mask by the love of his life...things changed rapidly then...she became not only frightened of him but horrified at his terrible visage, and he had counted her a traitor.
That night Erik had shown Christine to her bridal suite and he had stayed up in the darkness outside her room, almost the whole night, brooding over the bad turn of events. He fell asleep finally, sitting in his chair, sometime near morning. When he had awakened, it had not been in his own home, but in the mansion, in some type of man's den, with the mounted heads of beasts that some man had killed and put upon the walls as trophies.
The first person he had met was a woman, in the graveyard. She knew little more about this place and how one could leave. Then he met a little girl named Roselin who seemed to know who he was for some reason. She was very kind, and though Erik was wary of children, he really didn't know what was in their odd little heads, and moreover, didn't care to know, but she had shown him where his lair was and had told him where the kitchen was.
Erik was not expecting to leave the mansion at this time, so he left his cape and fedora at home. But of course he always wore the strange mask with the gauze over his mouth, and his opera cap. After leaving his lair. which was across a lake and up a considerable amount of steps, five storeys to be exact, Erik made his way to the kitchen by way of a very strange conveyence she called a lift or elevator. He knew how to push the button for the main floor. He then took a staircase up two more storeys, walked down several halls and finally to a set of large wooden double doors. He pushed one open tentatively and looked in. It was dark. He stepped in a bit further and suddenly some lights came on and almost blinded him. He shrank back in horror, wondering for an instant what had happened. Then he looked up and saw, it was only the crystal chandelier that had become bright, but seemingly by itself.
The rest of the room ... it seemed like a fancy Victorian dining room, done in shades of green, from its green marble fireplace to the overstuffed chairs with antimacassars on the top and arms to a settee on the other side. There was a long case clock, a spinet and much more, with matching wallpaper, carpeting and paintings. Small tulip shaped gas powered sconces remained unlit.
A large, long table graced the middle of the room and it was the centrepiece of the room. Someone had set fresh flowers in a vase on the table. Erik was quite taken with the beauty of the room. However, Roselin said there was a kitchen filled with food here. He saw a swinging door near the far end of the room and pushed it open.
To his surprise, Erik saw a man sitting, of all places, on the kitchen counter! Erik's glance took in a man seemingly of average height with dark brown wavy hair and blue eyes. Erik inhaled slightly. He stood for just a moment trying to decide what to do. He had no wish to meet anyone. He nodded his head and bowed slightly to the strange man in the kitchen and then without a word, backed out into the dining room. He would come back later when the kitchen was bereft of anyone.

Will sat on the counter, swinging his legs absentmindedly and torturing himself with thoughts of food when Erik suddenly came through the door connecting from the dining area. Will knew it was Erik because he would recognize the mask anywhere. He had always found the particular mask eerie, because it was a bold attempt at making something look lifelike; in his opinion, it made Erik look nearly priestly. There was something in that mask that gave off a perpetually calm and peaceful look, somewhat sleepy and perhaps giving. He had liked that movie and that Erik indeed. Perhaps he just liked silence.
Erik was taken aback at the sight of Will, standing still at the doorway where he had entered from for a few seconds before giving Will a polite little nod and backing out. Will looked down, making sure he wasn't opaque and had scared Erik off. He wasn't. So he called out to the boy. Despite his small fear that this Erik would soon come to hate him, like the others had, he was solid for now, and strong, and, well.
Playing human.
"You needn't leave, please!" Will called out to him, hoping he'd come back. He wouldn't want to spoil Erik's appetite simply by being in the room. This Erik was quiet, he knew, and perhaps a little shy in turn. He was polite enough to leave and not-eat in the presence of another man. But that was hardly fair of Will to cause that, so he hoped Erik would come back, either ignore him. He had wished, initially, that they would become comfortable with him, the characters. That they wouldn't mind his less than normal state. But they did, and so, he tried not to think to hard on the opportunity of a friend.

Erik heard the man calling to him, calling him back. He was speaking English, not French. Erik thought that odd. He stood still in his tracks, wondering what to do . He had come to find someting to eat, but that could wait. However, the fellow on the kitchen counter called out to him not to leave. He wondered why. But his curiosity got the better of him and Erik pushed open the door to the kitchen again.
He took in the strange man still sitting on the counter. Then his eyes took in the rest of the room. It was the oddest kitchen he had ever seen. Several machines he had never seen before and the ice box was quite immense and made out of a silvery metal. There was a rounded sort of table in the middle of the room with cabinets underneath and a bowl of fresh fruit upon it. A small simple wooden table with two chairs sat against the wall and next to a very futuristic looking stove. There, again, was a vase of flowers on the table. A door in the far wall led to what seemed to be a pantry.
Erik stood still for a moment again. Then he spoke: "Bon jour, Erik is so sorry to have disturbed you. Erik was told to come here to procure food at any time..." Erik spoke English very well, although with a heavy French accent. The gauze that covered his mouth moved in and out with his words.
Wondering who the man was, and feeling quite ill at ease and rather wishing he was anywhere else but here, he waited for the man to speak. Perhaps he could take a bit of food with him. He could not easily eat with his mask on and he would not take it off for anyone.

The boy greeted him in French, the proceeded to speak English with a heavy accent, "Erik is so sorry to have disturbed you. Erik was told to come her to procure food at any time." It was third person, which Will found undeniably… cute, and he leaned forward and hopped of the counter gently.
"I'm so sorry, where are my manners,"
Will said, switching it French. He supposed he might have a strong English accent while speaking in French, but he spoke it very well. Or at least, well enough to deal with those who spoke French better than English. The last thing he wanted any of the characters - especially the nice ones - to feel was uncomfortable, or any more of a stranger than they already felt, and so he tried to cater to their needs. "My name is William, but you can me Will." He stuck his hand out to shake with Erik, still smiling and hoping to God Erik's fingers wouldn't pass through his own. He rather liked this boy, the one who was silent in his film. As strange as his mask was, he hadn't seemed cruel. "I'm the… keeper of this house. You're Erik, aren't you? I heard you'd come to live here recently." [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • • • • •

The man jumped off the counter. He switched to French, which he spoke well and it made Erik a bit more comfortable. He offered a hand to Erik who took it hesitantly. The man's hand felt strange, as if it wasn't completely there, rather ethereal. But it didn't disturb Erik. What did disturb him though, was ...what was this place and why was he here?
"Oui, very nice to meet you Will." Will stated that he was the keeper of the house. Immediately Erik's thoughts turned to Christine. Perhaps he had seen her. He must find her. She was the only one he felt comfortable speaking with and his emotions came quickly when he spoke to her. He was almost afraid to ask. "Is there a girl here by the name of Christine Joy Daaé? Erik has been searching for her. She belongs to Erik."
Then Erik stood silent again. He wondered how he could get out of this situation comfortably. He had no wish to speak further with this man. Keeper of the House....that intrigued him, but he wouldn't ask. It would be impolite to ask his host too many questions. He was ready to forget about his hunger. He could go a few more days without food. He had done that many a time while composing. Now Erik hadn't done any composing since coming here, and he felt it was something he muststart again soon. He didn't know how long he would be here, but he hoped it would not be long.
Erik stood waiting, thinking about the most polite way to take his leave...

• • • • • • • "Oui, very nice to meet you Will," Erik said, shaking his hand politely. Will did appreciate manners ever so much. There was a pause before Erik said, almost fearfully, "Is there a girl here by the name of Christine Joy Daaé? Erik has been searching for her. She belongs to Erik."
Erik was silent and looked uncomfortable while Will tried to think of the best way to answer. He wasn't sure if it was a good or bad thing to tell the truth, but he supposed it was probably a very good thing. After all, he only wanted the characters to be happy, or as happy as they could be, here. In this crazy, upside down and inside out world. Will was pretty sure this was 1925 Erik - the mask certainly was telling - and he knew 1925 Christine was...
"Well, I think you'll be happy to find,"
Will said, hoping to Christ he wasn't accidentally giving Erik false information, "That your Christine is very much alive, and very much here." Will smiled, and added, "Now, I don't know where she is, exactly, but I do know she's here somewhere." He knew as soon as Erik processed his words he would want to go find Christine, and he hoped he would. A random part of Will's brain wondered, Won't he be hungry running around that castle looking for Christine on an empty stomach? But no, he new love couldn't wait, especially when it came to Erik. He barely expected Erik would thank him before dashing off to find her. OCC: Obviously this is going to be a short thread, unless Erik actually wants to stay and talk... we can do another thread after Erik either finds or doesn't find Christine![/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • • • • •

Erik's brown eyes opened wide under the mask, glinting yellow as they often did. He was noth surprised and excited that this man who preferred to be called "WIll" had told him that Christine was here. Then his hunger pains hit again. "Does Will know if it is acceptable for Erik to take some food home with him? When Erik finds Christine, he will wish to have dinner with her..."
Erik was both excited and a bit apprehensive that his Christine was here. She might still be frightened of him ... and yet he had to take that chance. "But you do not know where Erik could find her..." Erik was happy to have the information, but wished the man would make some sort of move to leave. Erik wanted to eat something and then go to find Christine. But he didn't know how to take his leave from this man. He knew how to act as a ghost and get anything done as long as he was the anonymous and fearsome opera ghost, but face to face was frightening. He didn't know how to act.
Finally, he decided to ask. "May Erik have a seat?" The silence between the two was rather deafening.

Erik looked every so excited, his eyes widening, and Will smiled at him. At least he could do some good, sometimes. "Does Will know if it is acceptable for Erik to take some food home with him? When Erik finds Christine, he will wish to have dinner with her..." Erik asked eagerly, and Will nodded. "Yes of course!" Will urged him, motioning to the kitchen at large. "But you do not know where Erik could find her..." Erik trailed off, and he looked a bit nervous. Will smiled, as he understood awkwardness very well when it came to going after a woman. He'd had his, for sure. Though, unlike anyone, he'd never married... "May Erik have a seat?" Erik asked. "Sure," Will replied, nodding to any of the seats the table. He himself walked over to one and sat. He had always liked this Erik. So... cute, in a modern term. "So what do you think you are going to tell Christine, when you find her?" He asked. Erik sat down at the small table in the kitchen. Will had also taken a seat. "What will Erik tell Christine when he sees her?" asked Erik, repeating Will's question in third person. "Erik does not know if Christine will wish to see him..." His brown eyes, beneath the mask, looked sad.
Then he thought again about what Will had said, that he was the Keeper of the House. That could have many meanings. It could mean the King was the architect and designer of the house. It could mean he was its owner. It could mean he saw that it was kept clean, but Erik rejected the last as being undignified for a King. But what could it mean? He didn't want any more conversation. He was already feeling stressful.
But Christine, he must find her. Will then asked him what he would say to Christine when he found her. It wasn't what he was asking, Erik wanted to know where she was. "Erik does not know. He will find out when he shall meet Christine again..." Was this man ever going to tell him where she was?
Then he became bold. "Why is Erik here? Why is Christine here?"

"What will Erik tell Christine when he sees her? Erik does not know if Christine will wish to see him..." Castagne trailed off, and Will tried to resist the urge to hug him. He was such an adorable boy. He wanted to take him home and keep him and protect him. Well, Will wanted to do that with everyone, but especially Castagne right now. "Erik does not know. He will find out when he shall meet Christine again...Why is Erik here? Why is Christine here?"Will blinked, not having expected Castagne's sudden burst of boldness. "Well..." Will started, and he really hadn't planned on getting into this discussion at the moment. Especially with Castagne. He had far more of a problem arguing with Castagne than, say, Lenoir. "...I'm afraid I'm not entirely sure," he admitted truthfully. "But..." he bit his lip, always conflicted on how to explain this in the least offending way, "In this world, you're a story. Now, it's not that your world isn't real, it's just... a story, here. And we - well, the... Now, Erik, please don't be angry, but I must tell you, I'm not exactly human. I'm a bit - well, a lot - dead, actually. And... we were lonely. And for some reason... you appeared. I don't know, but I'm sorry, Castagne. I'm afraid it might be my fault you're here." He waited with fear for the imminent anger that he feared so much. [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • • • • •

Erik frowned behind his mask. What was the fellow talking about...that he was dead? That made no sense...or did it?
Erik often felt as if he were dead himself. Dead to the world and to any hope of a relationship or normal friendships. He had often spent time in the graveyard contemplating the afterlife and feeling akin to the departed souls whose bones were the only vestige of them that was left. His face made him look as if he had a death's head instead of a normal face. And so he resembled them in looks in any case. But...this fellow...Will...he didn't look like that. He seemed as normal as anyone.
But then Will said something that upset Erik greatly. He said he was just a story... Whatever in the world could that mean? Erik fought to keep his tone even. He was becoming angry. When Erik became angry, it could be an embarrassing scene. He stood up and his eyes became wide and flashed with yellow. "Will is a spectre and Erik is but a story? How dare anyone say such a thing! Erik is as much a man as anyone...even though he looks like a...." Erik was gong to say monster, but of course he didn't want to admit what he looked like under the mask and the fact that he also thought he looked like a monster. Erik took a few steps toward the ghost, his index finger pointed at the King in an accusing manner. He took a few slow steps toward the King." Would that Erik had his sword..." Erik's blazing eyes were a complete contrast to the strange serenity of the mask...

• • • • • • • As he spoke, Will could see the expression on Erik’s face - well, as far as he could tell underneath the mask - from bewildered to upset, and he braced himself for the yelling that soon came: "Will is a spectre and Erik is but a story? How dare anyone say such a thing! Erik is as much a man as anyone...even though he looks like a...." Will nodded guiltily, knowing Erik was not done. A threatening finger was pointed upon Will as Erik inched cloer, but Will stayed still, knowing with regret that Erik could never hurt him, not physically.
" Would that Erik had his sword..."
”I’m just trying to tell you the truth,” Will said sadly, wishing the happiness of the conversation before could return. They had been being so... cordial then, he’d liked that. ”I’m sorry if that upsets you, but Erik, you have to see. This is not your world. You do not belong here, and it’s my fault you have to... It’s shame among a thousand that you can never hurt me, sword or not, my boy.”
He backed slowly into the counter behind him, his back half emerged in the wood, so that Erik could see for himself. ”I’m so sorry.” [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • • • • •
