Adina's disappointment faded when Erik quickly added that he would be purchasing the material for the drapes relatively soon. She began to feel a bit glad that she was alive again and having a normal 'human' conversation at long last. Something about this man gave her a sense of relief instead of fear. It was a welcoming sensation and she liked it.
"Yes... Yes, I clearly remembered the King. He was so nice to me. I had no idea that he was still here, even as a ghost. Oh gods, just how has it really been since I died?" She listened carefully to the masked man as he spoke of Roselin and the village. "A village?" She asked, sounding confused. "I have never been there... It must be nice. I would love to see it someday."
Adina twirled her hair around one finger as she listened to Erik explain more about the children... Roselin is a prisoner?! Her eyes widened in shock and she stared at him for a moment. "You mean-... She's trapped here too? The poor dear. There must be a way to stop this madness and regain our freedom."
But it was then that she had had the terrible vision of HIM and Charles and she fainted upon the floor. She was a bit clammy when Erik picked her limp body up before carrying her to the settee. Suddenly, the strong odor of the smelling salts made Adina's nose crinkle as she gagged and gasped back to life. "What happened?" She asked with a slight groan, raising a hand to her head. Had she passed out? She didn't even remember anything up until she fell into a panic over the horrible memories. She looked up at Erik, her eyes searching his for an inkling of mutuality in their endeavor to be free of this accursed manor.

"You fell into a swoon, my dear. I carried you here and you luckily awoke to the acrid odor of the smelling salts." Erik looked at her with sympathy, as he pulled a chair over to the settee, next to her. "You looked as if you might have been frightened by something...I...I didn't frighten you, did I? If so, I surely did not mean to..." Erik had frightened many young women in his career as the Opera Ghost, some on purpose, some not...so he would not have been surprised if for some reason he had frightened Adina. He hoped not, for he liked her.
"The King is here, it's true, however he is not easy to find. So you remember him? He seems to be a truthful sort? He was the first one who hinted to me that the ghosts are the ones who have pulled us in to this mansion. I don't know about you, for you were a ghost before. But the newer residents, those of us who are alive, as you are now, were brought in by the ghosts for some strange reason which they refuse to tell us about. We have not been allowed to leave. "
"As for Roselin, she appears to be trapped here too. She is a villager, so I am surprised. Her father lives in the village, but is apparently not very good to her. He rather ignores her if what she says is true. She is a very sweet girl, and has asked me to adopt her, which I am sure would be out of the question unless she truly had no family. But for the time she is here, I shall look after her. The reason I say that she is trapped...she has a suite in the dormitory section with her name on the door. Apparently anyone who has their name anywhere in this place appears to be a prisoner."
"Would you care to go up to the mansion at all? You are welcome to stay here as long as you need to, but perhaps there is a suite with your name on it too. Then we might know if there are plans for you to stay here...as a live person..."

"I-.... I'm terribly sorry if I caused you any distress or imposed upon you, Erik." She looked down and clasped her hands upon her lap. She felt hot, her face flushed with a rush of rosy blood to her cheeks. Her eyes quickly looked up at him when he asked if he had frightened her. "No! Of course not. You didn't do anything to scare me. I only had a troubling memory but I can't quite remember it now."
Adina listened carefully to Erik when he asked her about the King. She paused a moment and tried hard to fully recall him. "Yes,well, only vaguely," She murmured softly, her mind still trying to remember. It was hard for her to recollect as she kept her eyes on the masked man before her... There was something about him that she liked. He was the first man she felt that she could trust. She felt safe around him.
So... There were other people trapped here. The villagers. She remembered having to go out to the village to acquire groceries for the cooks of the manor when they wanted to prepare special feasts for the master of the house. But she couldn't remember this Roselin that Erik spoke of. Perhaps she came here long after Adina had died and she was still trapped here as well. This was just terrible! There were possibly many other people stuck here, forced to stay if their names are marked on the dormitory doors. Adina's eyes widened in shock. She HAD lived in the dormitories while she was alive... Was her old room still there after all this time?
"Yes!" The maid quickly spoke up, rising to her feet as she felt renewed vigor and strength in her once frail bones. "I mean-... Yes, thank-you. I would love to go back up to the manor. A suite... Yes, I do believe I did once have a room here while I performed my daily chores and other duties." There was a small hint of fear in her voice... It had been so long. What would she find in her old room again? Good memories or waking nightmares? Would everything still be in order or utter chaos? These questions could only be answered once she was back in the manor again. And she had to find out now!

"No, Adina, you caused me no distress and it is a delight to have you here, no imposition. You were rudely thrust into my home by some unknown, not by your own will. I could hardly be distressed by that. And it has indeed been lovely to meet you." Erik paused, a bit self-conscious. "Some find me strange and upsetting to look upon. I am glad that you do not."
As Erik spoke about Roselin. a villager, not being able to leave either, the maid's eyes grew wide, seemingly with shock. "Roselin is a girl who lived in the village, but strangely, the village is not in the same time as we are. By that I mean that it seems to be somewhat after the turn of the century. The twenty-first century, that is. She knows many things about modern acourtements and gadgets. I had her explain several of them to me, but I didn't understand her explanations. She is 14 years old, she said, and apparently she has not the skills as yet, to teach things to anyone else. However, I find her delightful, if rather incomprehensible." Erik gave a smile at that. He really liked the little girl.
Then Adina rose and said she felt she would love to go back up to the manor and look to see if there was a suite for her. "Then let us go and search for it, Adina. I should love to see if there is a suite for you also. Come with me then." Erik led the way to the boat again, stepped in, and offered his hand to her to come aboard.

Adina sighed with relief. She was glad that she had not caused Erik any stress over her fainting; she was still a bit disappointed in herself for showing how weak she was in front of someone she barely knew. And it made her want to just hide from him. It wasn't until he confided in her that other people found it unsettling to look at him. But she didn't.
Adina took Erik's hand and squeezed it gently. "I do not find you strange," She said with a kind smile. "It is not the outward appearance that I judge. But the heart." She placed her other hand to her chest. "And I can tell that you are a very kind soul, Erik. And I am very grateful that I met you."
The village was trapped in a different timeline?? How was that even possible, the maid thought to herself. This was all too strange for her mind to process! She continued to listen to Erik as he continued to speak of Roselin and the village... Truth be told, Adina had been from from earlier time as well. She was from the era of the pneumonic plague... How long had this manor been around? But when Erik smiled upon thinking of Roselin, she too smiled. This was so nice, sharing a smile with someone she felt comfortable with.
Adina smiled and followed Erik as he led her to the boat. She felt that this was just one of the ways for her to get over her past and lay her fears to rest, so to speak. Her heart lifted and nearly soared in her chest as she reached out for his hand. Suddenly, she slipped on some smooth rocks, stumbled into the boat and against Erik. She quickly looked up at him... What was she to do now?! Move away? Stay in this caring man's arms? No, she couldn't! She took a small step back and averted her eyes away from him. "I-I-I'm sorry," She muttered, a tinge of blush rising in her cheeks as she nervously began to run her fingers through her hair. Her big green eyes looked back at Erik as she wondered what he was thinking.

Adina seemed somewhat embarrassed. Erik had put out his hand to her to guide her into the boat, but she had slipped and fallen against him. It felt quite nice. She pulled away, and started to blush. "It's all right, Adina. I would not disparage you for a little slip of the ankle. In fact, it was rather lovely..." Now it was Erik's turn to blush. He didn't know this young lady well. His visible cheek slowly became visibly pink instead of his pale, almost white visage. He could feel the warmth in his face. He turned his face away so she could see more of the white half-mask instead of his face.
"It is comfortable to sit in the prow of the boat, facing toward the front, Adina." Erik lit the lantern and passed it to Adina. "If you would hang it on the front of the prow, the lantern will guide us safely across the water." Erik knew the lake so well he generally didn't even need a lantern. But the journey would be more enjoyable for Adina if she could see around them.
Erik stood and guided the gondola with the long oar, around a bend and from thenceacross the lake. The water was cold and still and dark, but the air was warmer and it caused a mist to rise from the lake. As they approached the other shore, Erik stepped onto shore and pulled the boat onto the ground from the shallow water. He removed the lantern from the prow and offered his hand to Adina again.
From thence, they continued to the bridges which led up to the mansion. When they crossed the last one, a door appeared slowly, lit by the lantern's glow.It was really a set of huge wooden carved double doors. Erik opened one of them and it led to a short corridor, at the end of which there was a mysterious metal pocket door and a two buttons to the side. Erik blew out the lantern and placed it inside and to the side of one of the doors. He then exited into the hallway. There was a large window on one side and the sunlight was bright and almost overwhelming after the perpetual night of Erik's home.

The young woman's eyes lit up a little when Erik assured her that everything was alright and that he was not mad when she had slipped. Truth be told, she was a bit afraid that he would be mad and scold her. But quite the opposite... He turned away from her, his half-mask now to her... His mask. Oh, how Adina wondered what was beneath it. But she would not dare to ask him to remove it for fear he would become very uncomfortable just as he was now uncomfortable. She wanted to tell him that she too thought it was lovely when she was so close to him but kept silent.
"That sounds wonderful," She quickly said, taking her place at the front of the gondola. It was a very beautiful boat, finely crafted and with a smooth, glossy finish to the touch as she ran her pale hand over the prow. She took the lantern and carefully hung it up. The mist was beautiful over the black, mirror-like water. She gently dipped her hand into the water before shuddering and drawing her hand back. It was icy cold as the mist swirled about where her hand had penetrated through the fog.
As Erik landed the gondola and stepped onto the shore, Adina watched as he extended a hand to her once more. She hesitated, unsure if she should after her last mishap. She took in a deep breath and reached for his hand, making absolutely sure she would not lose her footing. One foot out. A good start. And then the next one... A shaking sigh of relief escaped her lips as she kept her eyes on Erik. She was still reeling that she was feeling so comfortable around him. After years of being hurt or threatened by her father, even long after he was dead.
"Thank-you, monsieur," She murmured softly as she looked up at the doors in front of them. They were beautiful. Everything about this underground expansion was beautiful. The lake was beautiful. Even... She couldn't bring herself to even think his name this time. Nothing could stop her from giving his hand a gentle squeeze as the doors opened. The warm sunlight poured in from a window etched into the wall, causing Adina to wince underneath the glare. It felt so nice and warm against her cool skin yet the light stung at her still sensitive eyes.

As Erik blushed and turned his mask toward Adina, he could see her studying it. Everyone was always so curious as to what was under the mask. But when they saw, they were sorry they had asked. Most women were frightened, most men disgusted. He was thought to be a demon, a monster.... of course no one had seen his face since he had come to the mansion, save Christine Emilie, who had of course seen his face before...and those people who had seen the high school stage play. How they had gotten his deformation so perfectly, he didn't know. In any case, no one else knew what lay under the mask...
After they arrived on the opposite shore and he extended a hand, Erik saw a bit of hesitation on Adina's part. She was afraid she would slip, he thought. "It's all right," he said quietly.
Erik saw Adina's eyes roaming the lovely carved doors leading from his lair. He felt her squeeze his hand and he squeezed it back. Then he opened the doors and noticed that Adina's eyes were sensitive to the sunlight as his were from so many years of living underground. He shaded his eyes with his hand. He didn't like bright days for this reason. Sometimes the brightness was so intense that he could barely see outside on days like this.
Erik pointed to the futuristic looking metal pocket doors ahead of them. "The lift," he said simply. He walked up to it and pushed the upper of two buttons. The button lit up and in a moment a chime sounded and the doors opened to a small room with nothing in it. Erik entered. "Come in, my dear, this will take us to the main floor."

Adina quickly looked away when she could sense that Erik was uncomfortable with her almost intense staring. She didn't even realize she was looking so keenly at him. She looked back out onto the lake as they landed. It was all so strange, she thought to herself. But yet she was not afraid. Nervous and excited, but not afraid. Not of Erik, nor the unusual underground expanse. Not even the darkness could engulf her with dread any longer.
Erik's words were so soothing to her, like warm water in a refreshing bath. Adina smiled as she had taken his hand and stepped onto the shoreline, careful to firmly plant her feet upon the sandy shoals.
Adina dropped back a bit as they entered the sunny hallway, her hand still shielding her eyes. "Forgive me," She winced softly. "It seems I have not quite yet adjusted to such bright conditions." She blinked a bit as her eyes slowly became more accustomed to the bright rays of the sun streaming into the room... She looked down at her hand. She could see his hand tense around her in a slight squeeze... She as stunned. She didn't know whether to lean forward and hold his warm arm against her just to feel warmth again or draw back...
She did neither, only holding his hand tighter with joy.
The maid looked up at the doors when Erik pointed to them. She was stunned! How was it she did not know about all this?! It was all so strange yet.... Yet beautiful. The doors, the hallways, and now this odd-looking lift. She jumped a bit when she heard the soft chime, not expecting something that. As Erik went in, she paused to look around the strange, doorless room except for the ones through which one would enter or exit at a whim. She quickly stepped through the threshold and into the metallic box when Erik called to her... How was this all here? In the manor? But this was a mere passing thought; all Adina could think upon was the thought of seeing her room. Perhaps even her old diary! May that would unlock some secrets about the manor which only she would know.

Erik noticed that the lift was strange to Adina, and why not? He had read about such things, before he had actually used one, but Adina appeared to be from a much earlier era. "It takes people between floors, just as a staircase does. However, the lift appears to go places that the stairs do not, in this case." He pressed a button for the main floor. "It's not magic," he said softly. "There are cables attached to this room and electricity pulls them up and down through a shaft. " He smiled. "Perhaps you're not intersted in how it works, but let me assure you, it's perfectly safe."
The lift stopped, the doors opened and Erik held his arm in front of the place where the door went into the pocket so that Adina could pass through. He didn't want the doors start to close and frighten her.
"The dormitory suites are down several corridors from here," Erik said, pointing. He was silent for a few moments as they walked. "So does the mansion look much different from the time in which you originally came?"
The hallways they passed through had pieces of beautiful furniture in them, of quite a good quality. Many had large vases or statues sitting on them. It appeared to Erik that the furniture had been cleand and polished and that the art pieces had been dusted and cleaned also.
Wall hangings though, that was a different story. They had been beautiful and brightly coloured when they were new, but someone who knew nothing of good art, textiles or common sense, had put many of them in the hallways across from the windows and the sun had damaged them greatly. Erik shook his head. However, the windows looked sparkling clean. Someone had been busy. He wondered who.
They arrived at the entrance to the dormitories. "The men's are on the left and then women's on the right. The married couples have larger suites, but some each have their own too. I cannot understand how they decided this. Mine of course is not even near this...I am grateful of course, to have my own place." Erik opened the door for Adina. "We shall have to look for your name on the door, Adina. And then we shall see what they have prepared for you...Please walk ahead of me and check each door..."

Adina was very curious about the strange "lift". Being from the 14th century, she had been quite overwhelmed with the odd and new devices and items in the manor. Most of them she had gotten used to over time, but the lift was something she hadn't encountered. To be honest, it frightened her a bit, a strange door opening up at the press of a button-like device? Very curious and usual at the same time. She was interested and yet very much afraid at the same time.
As the lift moved, the maid gave a small squeak of shock and clung tightly to Erik with fear. The sudden, jarring motion of the box gave her quite a start and her heart nearly leapt out of her throat. When the lift stopped, and it eventually did (thank goodness!), Adina gratefully stepped out and onto solid ground. The feel of hardwood floors beneath her feet once more was most satisfying.
It was a quiet walk down the twisting and winding corridors. Adina kept looking up at Erik and would give a small smile every now and then. "Well," She began when he had inquired to her about the look of the manor. "There are some unusual peculiarities, like those strange pictureboxes some of the patrons have in their rooms. They say it is a 'telly', I believe is the proper term for it... But there is one thing that I keep with me at all times..." She reached between her breasts and pulled out a pocketwatch attached to a gold chain round her neck. "Father gave it to me as a gift." But she would not tell Erik the real meaning behind this 'gift'. At least, not until she knew him a bit better.
Further down the hallways, Erik took notice of the tapestries and hangings about the manor. Pieces by Turner, Henry Fuseli, and many other classic artists were hung about in the walls in no particular order or fashion. She had read about them in her studies of the books in the manor. However, it took a lot of her to use her energy to move the books, so she only did so with mostly the art history books and other studies of the arts.
She smiled to herself when she notice Erik looking at how well kept the rooms were. It was no other than herself who had been keeping the manor in order. Even when she was a ghost, she had some bit of power to sweep away the dust and cobwebs with the wave of a hand.
When they arrived at the dormitories, Adina tried hard to remember which room was hers. The names, sadly, had faded over the years and they were nothing more than ghosts themselves. It was very hard to make out the letters on each etched plate, some more damaged than others. But then... There it was.
Ad..n... Gil...espie
She drew in a deep breath and reached for the door handle. Her heart was pounding and she nearly felt faint again. But she closed her eyes and managed to turn the knob as the door creaked open, its hinges rusted and old. She slowly opened her eyes to see the sight before her.

Adina held onto Erik as the lift rose from the cellars. She seemed frightened and he put his arm around her. When they exited, she seemed relieved. They walked along the corridors and at one point, Adina pulled out a pocket watch that she said was a gift from her father. Erik looked at the early watch. "Beautiful watch." He pulled his own pocket watch from the small pocket in his vest and looked at the time. "I would be lost without mine,:" Erik said with a smile. "It seems that many of the clocks that are in the house seem to have their own minds as to what is the proper time. I have set and re-set many of the the clocks in the house and some of them show a time many hours off after just a few minutes. And there is nothing wrong with their movements."
Adina mentioned the device called a telly which some of the residents had in their rooms. I don't believe I have seen such a device, although I have seen some moving pictures that are called security cameras. And there is a strange device that Roselin has called a computer. What it computes, I don't know. However, she promised to show me how to work it. It looks fascinating.
Adina seemed interested in many of the art pieces in the hallways and she stopped at many of them to look and appreciate their beauty. Erik stood behind her and smiled, "You are an afficianado of the arts, Adina? Some of these appear to be quite old and possibly valuable."
Erik mentioned again that the rooms were much cleaner than when he had first arrived. "The halls were atrocious, fulll of dust and one could hardly see out of the windows, so full of grime were they."
They arrived at the dormitories and Adina started to look at the names on the doors. The newer residents had new name plaques on their doors, but some of the older ones were only painted on the doors and hard to read because of their fading. Adina finally found hers and some of the lettering was even missing.
Erik gazed at it for a moment, then said, "I am afraid, my dear that they weren't expecting you..." He thought that the ghosts normally did not need a room with their name in which to stay and so this must be her old room.
Adina opened the door carefully and it seemed, with trepidation. The rusty hinges made their complaint as she pulled the door open and looked inside....

The maid felt rather embarrassed when she clung onto Erik like a frightened child. She hated herself for always being so uncertain of new and strange things. But it was when Erik's arm was around her and she felt his warmth against her body then she looked up at him. She felt safe, as if nothing could ever harm her again. Her heart slid back down her throat and rested in her chest once more when they were back in the manor.
Adina quickly put away her watch. She had no desire to speak about it any longer and only turned her attention to Erik's... It was so beautiful. She had never seen a more finely crafted device in her life. As Erik went on to talk about the many clocks in the manor and how they would... All be set at different times? Even after being reset? That seemed rather strange, she thought. How could the clocks do such a thing? Unless it were the other ghosts playing tricks. She wrinkled her nose. She didn't like the other ghosts performing parlor tricks like that, especially since she was now the one who would have to work on stopping such nonsense because she was alive again.
Moving pictures? A "computer"? Such strange things, she thought! She had once heard of a camera that used film to take pictures. But that was long after her time. They had used pinhole cameras where she came from. She didn't seem to like or really understand the new devices these more modern people used.
Adina smiled to herself when Erik asked if she were an "afficianado". Afficianado? It made her blush. "No, monsieur," She said, turning her head away so he wouldn't see her reddening face. "I'm no such thing. I just appreciate the beauty. Because I never knew such beautiful things in my life, I fell deeply in love with the arts as a, how do you say it, 'means of escape'?"
"I know," She said in response to Erik's comment about the rooms. She gave him a curt smile as the arrived at the dormitories. She was afraid, she wanted to just stop and go back but she had to move on.
But it wasn't long until they came across the door... Her door. She was deathly afraid of what she would, or wouldn't, find. After several moments of struggling with the handle, the door finally gave and it opened for her with more ease. She was scared, excited, and nervous all at once. Her heart was beating out of control when she stepped inside.
She slowly surveyed her surroundings... Everything was exactly as it was so many years ago. Except for a lot of dust and cobwebs, it was perfectly preserved as if frozen in time. Her old dresser, the desk by her bed that held her most treasured books and upon which her washing basin and pitcher to clean her face rested. Even the books were without any chew marks from bugs or moths... The maid could not be happier. Or more terrified.

Erik certainly didn't mind when Adina clung to him in the lift. Since coming to the mansion, he had felt much more normal than he had ever felt in his life before. Out in the world before coming here, he had felt an outcast, a thing of horror, soneone everyone shunned for his mishapen face. But here at the mansion, folks were more accepting of him. Many of them had their own singular strangenesses and oddities, but that seemed to make most more accepting of him. Erik was feeling more human than he ever had in his life. Certainly there were some who still disparaged him and called him monster and thing and many even worse epithets.
And perhaps Erik himself had changed because of this acceptance. He was much more friendly and even outgoing. His thoughts were not all dark and dreary anymore, filled with thoughts of revenge and hatred. For some odd reason, he had actually been thrown into the role of hero a few times, something he never would have anticipated. And now, here was a lady, who had been a ghost, and from many centuries past, clinging to him, and not fearing him. Not fearing him...that was amazing. It was lovely. He thought of some of the other people who trusted him and didn't fear him. There was no one really from his former life. Here, there was a growing list.
Erik pulled away from his daydreaming and turned his focus on Adina. She had opened the door and stepped inside. She seemed surprised or shocked...he wasn't exactly sure. But the room had been lovely, now it was covered in dust and cobwebs. But Erik was sure that Adina would remedy that quite soon.
"Adina," he said quietly, still standing outside the doorway, but looking in. He didn't want to enter a lady's chambre unless he was bidden to do so. "Is this your former suite?"

Adina knew that the feelings she was now experiencing were completely new and surreal to her. She was happy to be with Erik, happy that she actually had someone to talk to. She no longer wondered what was beneath the mask and only wondered what the future held in store for them both. She wanted nothing more than to have friends in the manor. She was so lonely within the estate. True, she was getting along with Meg and Christine but they were mere acquaintances, not quite friends.
The maid looked around and smiled as she spied a feather duster and cloth. She quickly grabbed it up and was about to start cleaning away the cobwebs but stopped. She looked back at Erik and saw he was standing just outside the threshold. She gently ushered him in and smiled. "You may enter if you wish, monsieur... Yes, this is, well... Was my suite. But it still feels like my own."
She started to hum and clean her room with renewed passion. She felt happy doing her duties and it made her want to sing. In no time at all, the room was free of dust and webs; it looked just the way it had when she first came to the manor.
