Basic Information
Age: 27 years old
Canon or OC?: Phantom OC, she worked at the Opera for a long time, and through a fluke, has been brought here along with all the other Phantom characters. [/size]

Appearance
She's only 5'1", but she often wears taller shoes. The way she carries herself, you would never guess that she is as short as she is.
Body type:
Very skinny, considering the tightness of the corsets she wears. She walks with her head held high, a swing in her hips, as though she owns the world. (With the amount of money she has, you could almost say she could, if she wanted to)
Eye color:
Hazel, with a small sparkle to them.
Wardrobe:
The most fabulous clothing she can get her hands on. She has quite the affinity for hats, and, consequently, has many of them in her wardrobe. Her dresses are always of the highest quality, and silk is included in many of them.
General Appearance:
Her face is long, elegant, as is her neck. Elegant is probably the best way to describe everything about her. She takes the greatest pride in her appearance, and making herself appear beautiful to everyone she sees. Her skin is a lily white, and of a softness that she works hard (by not working hard at all) to maintain. Her lips almost always have the slight curve of a smirk to them, as though she must know something that you do not. Her hair is long, curly brown, though it is almost always kept up in some sort of fancy bun.
She has scars on her upper thighs and stomach from her fathers abuse, though she keeps these hidden from sight at all times, like a proper lady should.
Played By: Anne Hathaway (She doesn't have many period pictures, but her looks is just so perfect for Madeleine, I have to use her anyway :3)

Personality
When first introduced to anyone, her attitude could almost be described as snotty. It certainly isn't entirely intentional, but she puts a lot of people off of her in this way. She can't abide girls who are sweet and kind and perfect and... *shudder* She just dislikes them quite a lot. However, she can be a very good friend to anyone who shares the sense of humor that she has, which is rather dark and cold. For this reason, she can often appear to others as a bit..well...evil. Evil would not be the right word for it at all. She has lived her entire life in the backstabbing, cut throat society of upper class France. She has had to develop a bit of a thick shell to get around, not to mention the abuse that she has gotten from her father, which makes her loath to open up to anyone.
However, when she does open up to someone, when she finds someone that she truly trusts and is fond of, the smirks and the mean teases fall away, replaced by smiles and giggles that one could never imagined came from her. True, she still keeps her snarky personality, and her sense of humor, but there is a softness to her as well, a gentleness. This is most evident when she plays the piano or sings. However, singing is something she doesn't do anymore. It would take quite a lot of persuasion to get her to venture back into that territory again.
Dreams and Goals:
More than anything, Madeleine wants to get away from her father, who has made her life the hell it is today. His abusive and controlling nature has kept her from all of the things she holds most dear.
Strengths:
She is quite good at playing the piano, though she never did learn to read music. She learns everything by ear, and most of what she plays is improvisation.
She does have a beautiful voice, though she refuses to sing anymore. It is rather darker than most sopranos of her day would have sounded like, but has a fullness to it that makes it quite the pleasure to listen to.
Money. She has lots of it, and is not afraid to throw it around to get her way.
Weaknesses:
Vanity. She is rather vain about her looks and spends much of her mornings in front of the mirror, making sure she looks picture perfect.
Meanness. She can be very scathing and rude when she wants to be.
Low self confidence. This seems like it conflicts with vanity, but in her case, I don't believe it does. She's sure of her beauty, as it is something she works at. But everything else about her- her piano playing, her personality, her voice- she is quite unsure of, largely because of her father's abuse.
Fears:
She fears that she will not find a way to escape her father's controlling nature while retaining financial security for herself.
She also fears that she has become such a cynical person, no one can be fond of her (this is a very deep set fear, I don't think she's even conscious of it)

The Past
Her mother was a whore, and Madeleine therefore never met her. Her father, Jacques Fontaine, has made her life a living hell from a very young age. She once had a love affair with an Alexandre Moreau. Her friendship circle has always been limited to upper class society, and friends that aren't really friends. Consequently, Alexandre is the only one who ever grew close to her.
History:
She was born on January 13th, 1842 in Lyon, France. Her father was extremely wealthy and unmarried, so his house was always filled with an assortment of courtesans and whores. Madeleine was an accidental birth to one of these, and the courtesan died in childbirth, her last dying wish being that Jacques raise up the child and not throw her onto the streets.
Grudgingly, Jacques accepted the task, and the baby girl grew up in a house with a hundred different mothers, not all of which were kind to her. Some were quite annoyed at her presence and would often beg Jacques (with much crying and sobbing) to put the child in an orphanage. He must have harbored some small affection for the girl, for this, he never did.
He wanted a son. He never expected a child at all, but if he had to have one, he wanted a son. Someone to carry on the family legacy, someone to continue the family tree. A girl was practically useless to him, and so Madeleine grew up with the mindset that she was of no use to anyone at all. She was not wanted. And that was the mindset that they both lived with until Madeleine was around 17.
At 17, Jacques began to notice that his ward was certainly no longer a child. He began to notice the way her skin shone when she stood in the right light, the way her hair flowed down her back, the curves that existed between her bosom and hips. He had never held any fatherly affection for the girl. Consequently, he had no moral qualms against taking what he badly wanted.
Madeleine became his 'Chickadee', as he would call her (to this day, the name is haunting to her, and she will tear apart anyone who dares to use it), and he used her however he very well pleased. During the days, by his command, she would read to him, sing for him, anything he wanted her to do, she would do. At night, he would take her to bed and leave her with scars that could never be erased from her mind or body.He found that he quite liked her singing voice and hired her a singing tutor, Alexandre Moreau, and forbade her to sing for anyone else.
Alexandre was a man of 20 years old, and was a skilled musician himself. The singing lessons always took place under Jacques' strict observance, but that did not stop the two from developing feelings for one another.
At this time, Madeleine was still relatively sweet, innocent, a lady in every respect. This was beginning to disappear, little by little, as her father's abuse contained, but she clung to it with all of her might. She clung to the hope of Alexandre, who was the only bright light in her otherwise dim life. When left alone, which was never for more than a moment or two, he would promise her that he was going to take her away from her father's home, steal her away and never let her go. Jacques was so wrapped up in his new-found plaything, he noticed nothing of the plotting going on in secret between the two.
A few months after Madeleine had begun taking voice lessons, Alexandre approached her father, telling him that she was good enough to be in the company of the Palais Garnier, and that they should move to Paris to have her try her skill. Madeleine and Alexandre were planning to run away once they reached Paris, for it was a big city, and they could easily be lost there.
Jacques reluctantly agreed, seeing the merit in perhaps having an opera star for a daughter. They journeyed to Paris, bringing Alexandre with them for guidance and continued voice lessons. Once there, however, Jacques tightened his chain on Madeleine further, not trusting her in a large city such as Paris. He escorted her everywhere, even to the audition at the Garnier, where she succeeded in getting into the chorus. Madeleine was miserable, and Alexandre fought to find a new way to steal her from her father.
The two found their solace, however, in music. Alexandre's tutelage quickly moved beyond the realm of voice ad into piano, which he taught her eagerly. The two would play together for as long as Jacques found it pleasing, and this kept Madeleine's hope alive. Alexandre loved her. And he would save her.
The work at the Opera, too, kept her hopes high. Alexandre would come to every performance and bring her flowers, though her part was only a small one. He would compliment her, exalt her, telling her that she was the most beautiful woman to ever grace the stage of the Opera Garnier. It was perfect.
The two made a mistake, however. They let their guard down. Jacques discovered their love affair a few months after they arrived in Paris, walking in on the two embracing. Alexandre was banned from the household and Madeleine was pulled immediately from the Opera chorus.
She feel into a deep depression. Nothing could console her or make her any better about her state. Jacques punished her horribly and she was kept under lock and key in his home. But still, she believed that Alexandre must come for her, that he would come save her. One day, she managed to catch sight of a newspaper that Jacques had brought home. In it was an article detailing the marriage between one Alexandre Moreau and a lady of high estate.
Madeleine emerged from this, after 2 weeks of close to suicide, as the lady she has become today. She is cynical of everything, especially love and the goodness of people. Her father, though still abusive of her, has become slightly less controlling his older age, allowing her slightly more freedom, allowing her to mingle among those in the higher society. Of course, now that she has been transported to Phantom Manor, her freedom is complete...
RP Sample
Madeleine Fontaine made her way into the main hallway, her head held high, her shoes clicking against the floor of the room. Her skirts swished around her, and her hat fell over her face at an attractive angle. She looked as though she must have spent hours arranging every aspect of herself to look exactly right, which, in a way, she had.
She could, at least, appreciate the beauty of the place she had suddenly been thrown into. It had obviously once been a gorgeous manor, though it was now in ruins and much in need of repair. Her eyes grazed over some of the fallen stones and shattered glass the littered some of the ground. It wasn't anything like her home in Paris. But it would do nicely, she supposed. It wasn't as though she had a choice. She hadn't a clue why she was here or how she was meant to escape. But it was better, at least, than where she had been before...The state she had been in before...
