Christine collapsed onto her bed in a rather desperate state and buried her face in her hands and she let out a terrified sob. Earlier that morning, she had come upon a rather unpleasant surprise. Though the surprise wasn’t something that was there, so much as it was something that wasn’t there. Adelaide Valerius, the dear old woman whom the girl had called ‘mamma’ ever since the late Professor Valerius had taken up patronage for Christine’s father, had mysteriously vanished.
As to where exactly she had gone, it was unknown, and it terrified the young woman as she sat in her bed, ringing her hands over and over in anguish. She couldn’t have gone far… could she have? After all, the poor old woman had lost the use of her legs… and yet that modern wheeled chair contraption that ran on electricity gave her mobility that she would have been otherwise without.
Christine dearly loved her adoptive mother, and had been happy to be able to see her enjoy some of the things in life as she had before reaching quite the age she had… and yet at the same time, she cursed that horrid mechanical thing! After all, if Mamma Valerius were to stay in bed, then she would not have been able to wander off and to get lost… As to where she had gone, Christine could not be certain, but the options frightened her.
She had heard rumors that, if they were to go to a certain point out beyond the village, that they would simply cease to exist altogether! She knew that it was unlikely that Mamma had managed to get beyond the Manor grounds, and even less likely that she would be able to get to the village, much less beyond… but the fact that it was still a possibility terrified her so.
She did not know what to think any more…. What to believe… How was she to know? Until quite recently, since her father’s death, Mamma Valerius had been the only family she’d known at all. She didn’t have any other living relatives (none that she knew of, at least) and even now, she and Raoul had only been married for a few brief months.
She stared down at her hands which she had been wringing over and over in her lap as she sat there. The tears in her eyes made the surroundings blurry, but she did not care much for seeing them anyway. After all, what she longed to be able to see, she knew would not be there. She was an orphan all over again. She knew nothing else to do than to assume the very worst: Mamma Valerius was dead.
