"I am a dancer for the Shah of Persia." Teressa smiled. "But I suppose that now, I'm going to be fired. I've been here over a week, the Shah is NOT going to be very happy." Teressa looked at the girl. She didn't look much to her, let alone an opera singer. But, she supposed, people were full of surprises. And it wasn't impossible. Then she thought over what the girl had said. The 'Opera Garnier'....Teressa had never heard of that before, but regardless, it meant that the girl worked at an opera house! Teressa had always loved the ballets that the opera houses would put on. And it was her dream to be in one...
"What's it like? Performing there? I suppose it must be a little frightening, but then again, what's a performer without a little stage fright, right?" Teressa leaned in enthusiastically. She wanted to hear everything. Anything she could take with her in case, one day, she could walk around without the mask on, and dance for a better audience than one royal and his chauvinistic court.

“A dancer?” The woman seemed a bit tall for the typical dancer she would see in the corps de ballet, but she wasn't going to comment on her height. “I see... hoe long have you been dancing for the Shah? I recall Monsieur Lavalais speaking briefly about being contracted by the Shah about some sort of architectural contract...”
“it is a bit frightening, but one cannot really be shy of the stage when working as a professional in the opera world. There's almost a thrill to it at times though, when you know that you've done exceptionally well... Actually, I think the most frightening experience I've ever had in the opera was after the performance was already over my first time ever performing a lead there. In fact, I was so frightened that I fainted right there on stage during the bows...”

Teressa's brow furrowed. What was Erik playing at? Why did he tell this little girl so much? No matter..."Really? After your first performance? It must've been the adrenaline rush, right? God, what I wouldn't give...I always wanted to perform on a stage...for a real audience..." Teressa smiled. But then, one thought made her smile falter and fade. "But...without the mask....I can't."
Thoughts of Erik and his running mouth found their way back into her head. Did he tell this little girl EVERYTHING? No, he'd never betray them like that. He couldn't betray them like that...If he said anything about the commission he got, the Shah would have BOTH their heads, never mind the favouritism he showed to the two of them. Teressa and Erik were a sort of pair, and if one goes, so does the other. She had to ask. "Sorry, mademoiselle, but how much did Erik tell you?"

“I'm not sure if it was the adrenaline, or if I had locked my knees, or what it was, to be quite honest... I do remember though somewhat being afraid... It was as if it wasn't myself singing. It felt odd. Quite odd – as if my very soul were leaving my body...”
And then the woman asked a strange question: how much did Erik tell you?... Christine frowned a little. “Not much, really. He told me that he was an entertainer of sorts for the Shah and that the Shah had recently contracted him for some sort of architectural contract... Why do you ask?”

"Usually Erik is a very private person. He doesn't like to talk much to other people...." The dirty hypocrite. She furrowed her brows beneath her mask, and her lips pursed. He never let her tell anyone anything about them. Why would he go and blab to this little girl? She nearly scoffed in derision.
"When did you meet him?" Teressa got a little defensive over Erik. He may be a fully grown man, able to take care of himself, but he could be so naive sometimes. She was sure that he said the exact same thing about her, but Erik had no idea how to handle himself in a social situation. Even after a century or so, he was considerably unversed in talking to women. It was a little sad, and she tried to help him, but he always refused. Stupid, stupid man...

“Oh.... I wouldn't have guessed honestly. He seemed a little shy, but not so much private per se. I met him a few weeks ago, in the little chapel. I was praying and he heard me and came to pray with me... Granted, he wouldn't et me see hi at all the first time that we met, but the second time he was far less apprehensive about it. I walked in on him while he was tuning the piano in the ballroom – or re-building it, really. The thing was in absolutely miserable condition... ”
She continued flipping through the pages until she came to about the point where she had been before when the had been reading in the house on the lake, then glanced back up at the woman again and before continuing to speak. She really didn't like the look this rather vulgar woman was giving her behind that domino. She took a breath, and then went on.
“I told him about my plans to try to restore the chapel and wondered if he was also able to repair organs since the organ there was in rather poor condition. He said that he was and would be more than happy to help and then offered that we take a stroll and so we did.”
She conveniently left out the part where she had mistaken him for Érik and had to explain to him about her dilemma with how Érik had been telling everyone that they were engaged, nor did she tell the woman about Monsieur Lavalais playing at being her fiancé, as he had been told that she was to wed Érik, which was most certainly not true! She didn't quite know what it was, but something about this woman didn't settle right with her.

"Ah..." Teressa thought about it. She didn't seem to know much, so that was good. She relaxed into the chair, crossing her legs. "Well, I suppose that's fine then." Teressa smiled a bit. This little girl wasn't much of a threat anyway.
"What are you reading there? Is it interesting?" Teressa tried her best to look nicer, more interested. She'd probably come off a little more arrogant than she'd intended...She wasn't good with first impressions...What would Erik think!

((changing it slightly because I only have been able to find the modern novel l'Imitation, so I'm not really sure what to do for that. Besides, they never actually said that was the book – it only said that there were editions of the book which looked like that which she was reading))
Suppose that's fine then? Christine didn't understand? Was there something that may have been wrong/ Monsieur Lavalais had been nothing but cordial to her, other than when he was trying to impersonate Érik... She was going to ask her is something was the matter, but didn't have the opportunity to before the woman spoke again.
“This?” she questioned, glancing down at the dusty red book with the gilt edges in her hand. “Oh, it's just a psaltery. I enjoy reading through sometimes. I had recently been doing so, but hadn't the opportunity to finish, so when I saw it, I thought that I may as well. They are very beautiful, you know.”

"What, the psalms?" Teressa cocked her head. She wasn't much of a religious girl, really. But she'd go to Mass with Erik when he wanted to go. She didn't read the bible often unless there was nothing else to read, and she didn't read the psalms. She believed in God and all, but she didn't think it was necessary to read his book. Wasn't it good enough that she talked to him now and again, after all?
It was a pretty little book that Christine was holding. Small, with gilded designs on the edges. She supposed that she might have to give it a look sometime. After all, psalms were like poetry, right? Religious poetry...Eh, perhaps she'd still look at it. It was worth a look, if someone else was interested in reading it. Then again, if this little Christine was one of those OVERLY religious types...

Christine nodded to the woman. “Yes, the Psalms. They're quite beautiful, you know?” Christine loved reading the Psalms in her spare time. They were calming, reassuring, and wonderfully written pieces of poetry – songs to give praise to the Lord almighty. Some might call her silly for reading them just for the sake of reading, but she didn't mind. She quite enjoyed them.
“Here is one of my favorites:
O sing unto the Lord a new song; for he hath done marvelous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory. The Lord hath made known his salvation: his righteousness hath he openly showed in the sight of the heathen. He hath remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel: all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise. Sing unto the Lord with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm. With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the Lord, the King. Let the floods clap their hands: let the hills be joyful together Before the Lord; for he cometh to judge the earth: with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity.”

"I've never really been very religious. But Erik keeps taking me to mass when there's a church nearby and it's Sunday. He's an avid follower." Teressa smiled a bit. "But you're right. It's like poetry."
Situating herself on the armchair again, Teressa re-evaluated the woman. She wasn't a threat, and she liked poetry. Perhaps they could find a common ground. This little woman was kind of cutesy, naive as she was.
"What else do you like? Poetry seems to be on your list..." Great, here she went, trying to make friends she'd probably regret having later.

((gaaaah! Suckish replies.... This thread needs something to happen XD ))
“Oh,” the girl said simply when the woman said that she was not really the religious type. “Well... I am glad that Monsieur Lavalais has been able to show you the ways of the faith either way. And yes, the Psalms are quite like poetry.”
Christine nodded when the woman stated that she assumed that poetry was on her list of likes. “Yes, yes it is. I also am quite fond of gardens and flowers.”

"I am the Shah of Persia's private dancer. Whenever he calls on me, I dance and do acrobatics for him. I never asked for the job, but...when I have myself and someone else to help support...you do what you must, right?" Teressa smiled, nodding a bit.
Yes. You do what you must in order to survive. In such a terrible world like this, filled with mistrustful people, you have to fight and struggle to keep your place in the chain. It was human nature, after all. The 'Survival of the Fittest'.

Christine hesitated a bit but nodded. “I..... I never really wanted to start working at the opera, actually. It was more of something my Mamma Valérius pushed me into doing. She insisted that father would have wanted me to continue on with music after his death, but.... It's just not the same as it used to be.... I don't think it ever will be again, to be quite honest...”
She gave a soft sigh and placed the ribbon marker in between the pages where she had stopped and then closed her book. “I don't think she ever really understood.... And then when all hope of an 'Angel of Music' left too, it just.... lost all of its charms....” The girl could no longer restrain a few tears in relation to the topic. Daddy.... “I can still sing. That is not the issue. It's just that... It's not the same as it used to be.... It's actually the main reason I want to retire when my fiancé and I are finally married...”

"Oh, you're getting married?" Teressa smiled a little. She remembered the time when she herself had a prospect of getting married...She was going to get married to Dmitri...But she lost him. The day of the wedding. Put into disgrace by something that wasn't his fault, surely. She knew at the time that he'd loved her, he wouldn't have left her and disappeared for no reason...something had happened...but the thought of marriage still made her smile. For she had been so happy then, her thoughts had only been in one place, and that was with him.
"When are you to marry? That should be exciting..."
