"Teressa!" Erik directed his demanding question toward the lady. "What the bloody hell are you doing in that .... in Destler's arms? Didn't I fight for the chance to court you? Didn't I vanquish this.... Destler person?" Erik didn't want to call him a monster, as he himself had been called many a time. Even though Destler's actions were often monstrous. Erik could barely stand the thought of Destler and his bloody hands touching the beautiful and pristine Teressa.
Erik was bristling with anger as Destler continued to hold her. "Get away from him, Teressa...you know he'll only hurt you..." Erik couldn't understand Teressa. Perhaps she was the wrong person to court. Perhaps his emotions were wrong and he wasn't in love with her in reality. He didn't want to give up, but Teressa must have been lying about her feelings for Lenoir. It made him feel so betrayed...
Erik didn't come any closer to the couple ad Destler held Teressa. He didn't want to hurt Teressa and the thought that perhaps she didn't really love him as she had told him.... it was all a lie. He felt let down and utterly saddened and angry at the same time.

"Hurt me...?" Teressa sniffed, then wiped her eyes, looking up at Lenoir. "Hurt me?! HE'S NOT THE ONE KISSING OTHER WOMEN BEHIND MY BACK! At least he came to comfort me when he saw that I was hurt! How DARE you!"
She shook with emotion. It was true! How dare he do such a thing to her behind her back! "Who was she?! Hmm?! Some girl you just met?! Or perhaps a friend from your past?! I thought you loved me, but honestly, I don't know if I can believe you now!" Shakily, Teressa pushed herself out of Destler's arms and up to her feet. She walked slowly over to Lenoir, staring him down. "I thought you and I had a future! But how can I expect a future when you do this?!" Tears were still streaming down her face and she was holding herself back from hitting him or spitting harsh insults at him. She really did love him....she really did...she still did. That's why it hurt so much...

Teressa was weeping, tears coming down her face and what she said...she must have seen him with Ana. "Teressa...that woman...she's nothing to me...I don't even really like her. Just a casual friend. It wasn't really a kiss, just a joke. Truly...Teressa.... I love y0u...what can I say? You see something that you misinterpret and then you take up with this....Destler person...how do you think that makes me feel?"
Erik put his head down a bit, closed his eyes and held his face in his hands, trying to think of what to say. Then he looked her directly in the eye. "I fought for you Teressa! I fought him ... Destler... for the privilege of courting you. And now you betray me by going back to him? Over an idiotic joke? Perhaps I have misjudged you!"
Erik was angry now and he felt he was in the right. Destler was obviously filling her head with lies about Erik. "Teressa, listen to reason. Nothing happened back there. I don't even like the woman. She is a modern woman, difficult to understand. Her horse pushed us down in the hay. I was simply seeing her off, to be polite. I try to show everyone about the place, you know. If you are going to be a suspicious little snip, well I can't help that!" Erik turned away from her. He didn't want her to see the tears that were clouding his eyes.

Destler narrowed his eyes at Lenoir after the other man seemed to imply something but held his wagging tongue. Smart thing to do for Lord knows what Destler may have done if Lenoir had been less than civil with him. Keeping his hands upon Teressa in an effort to sooth her and he was by means restraining himself as he wanted Lenoir to see that he could be a fair, kind man if given the opportunity. More and more, he glared at Lenoir and believed that half-masked dolt did not even deserve a Goddess such as Teressa.
His visage sank away as he watched and listened to Teressa. Raising a brow while remaining knelt upon the floor even when Teressa stood. He couldn't quite believe what he was hearing or seeing. Perhaps it was the break he wanted and usually he'd been overjoyed and proud but somehow, he could find now joy in this. Why? The words the exotic beauty stated still dug harshly at him. Proving to him that Teressa's heart was not to him, but to Lenoir. It hurt as he finally stood slowly only to take a couple steps back. He was not about to get into this mess, gazing at the two with a blank gaze.
And now... now Lenoir continued to dig his own grave! Gawking at the half-masked man in almost utter disbelief of what he heard. After a moment, he began to laugh for nearly a minute then shook his head. Suddenly he was reminded of an old nursery rhyme of a little boy that went around kissing all the girls and making them cry. Oh, was Lenoir becoming a Don Juan Heartbreaker?!? Oh, what an Opera that would make! He laughed some more!
After a moment, he stepped forwards to stand behind Teressa, not touching her yet but he rose a hand wanting to jab a finger into Lenoir's face and give him a lecture. But how can he degrade another man when he's used women before, too. Mostly the Harlots to fulfill his fantasy of being with Christine. There was no smirk on his face as he watched Lenoir. The look on Destler's face was clear that Lenoir was done for. He didn't now whether to pity the man or punch him. "Why kiss a woman if you do not like them?" Not even he kissed Carlotta before he 'dealt' with her. He kissed harlots because of his fantasy but also because he did have some fancy for them. "You don't deserve a Goddess such as Teressa, Lenoir," his words deep, growling that matched his glare as he finally placed his hands upon Teressa's shoulders.

"OH, yes, of course!" Teressa's voice was filled with sarcasm. "Seeing her off! I should've known! Oh, but all of the fault MUST ride with me! Obviously I'm the only one misreading a bloody situation!" She was in half a mind to smack Lenoir, but she couldn't bring herself to do it. It would only hurt him, she knew...
"Monsieur Destler was only comforting me, after seeing that I was hurt! You know, what YOU'RE supposed to do? Oh, but I forgot, you were too busy 'comforting' that other woman!" She turned, storming off in the direction of the lifts to the lower floors. She couldn't take seeing him much longer, lest her heart break further.
"It's alright, I'll leave you two alone! There's no room for me in your little relationship with that....that...that whore!" And with that she picked up her skirts and started running for the lifts. She didn't really care that she hated them right now, she just wanted to get down to the little house on the lake and curl up in front of the fireplace with some tea. Perhaps shut herself in her room...

Erik turned again to face Teressa and Destler. "Shut the hell up, Destler! None of your damned bloody business!" Erik shouted at Destler, louder than was necessary for the short distance that he was from Lenoir. Teressa was so angry she looked as if she would smack Erik, but for some reason she didn't.
"What are you talking about, Teressa? Erik's sweet pure rose had suddenly grown thorns. Long ones. Maybe even fangs. Her voice was sarcastic and she had totally misunderstood what had happened in the stable and was feeding it back to him with venom. It hurt a lot to be labeled a liar when he was telling the truth. At least this once, he was. He truly didn't care much for Ana. The kiss in the hay had been nothing more than a lark, a joke. But apparently when it came to things like this, Teressa had no sense of humour. It was a shock to realize that. And she had been spying on him, too. Who did she think she was? Erik could kiss whomever he wanted to... he hadn't even asked Lavalais if he could court her yet. At this thought, Erik's heart sank. Lavalais would never give permission...and probably Teressa would tell him everything, and she probably was done with Lenoir too.
She called Ana a whore. That offended him, not because he was protective of Ana's virtue, which was possibly dubious, but because he didn't like the implication that he had kissed a whore. He had only kissed her in friendship. But if Teressa was going to be that way, well, Erik didn't need that kind of thing. Perhaps Teressa wasn't the right woman for him. But it made his heart ache to think that.
Erik gave Destler a black look. If he hadn't been there, perhaps Erik could have caught Teressa and talked her out of her snit. Erik didn't think it a good idea to go after Teressa when she was in that sort of mood, but he stayed a bit to make sure Destler didn't follow her either. His rival could make things even worse.

Destler stumbled quickly out of the way as Teressa, watching the tall pale woman depart with furious haste before he turned back around to face Lenoir. The look upon Destler's face said it all. He was rather stunned in a most delightful way at these unfolding events. Slightly dumbfounded at how this all played out, far better than any plan he could have conjured up! Destler did not have to do a thing and now, Teressa had estranged herself from the man whom stole her away from him. Oh, this was far too perfect.
Destler took a couple steps closer rather slowly as a sly, if not cocky attitude, filled his aura. "You know," he began, glancing over Lenoir with a carefree eye to measure him up, "I couldn't have done that better myself." His voice was rather low in volume, but a rough soothing tone that could disarm women and offend men. Smirking as Destler adjusted his fine black kid gloves, "I'm truly astonished. I do have to say thank you, though." Looking Lenoir in the eyes now boldly. "At least now... I have a chance. And I don't have to fight for her."
With that, Destler snickered in his throat and turned upon his heel to stride off with confidence. Tempted truly to chase after Teressa. But... he decided to at least move back to the table where he left his reading material and pick it up. He'll take another route, go elsewhere then go after Teressa. It was such a terrible idea to immediately follow an infuriated woman. He'll give it no more than a half hour.

Erik was stunned. Destler was exactly correct. He couldn't have done a better job alienating Teressa from Lenoir than Lenoir had done himself, and that unwittingly. Erik was too stunned to even say anything any more. It couldn't have been worse.
Now Destler was acting cocky and his attitude was overwhelmingly offensive to Erik. Destler looked Erik in the eyes and said, at least he had a chance with Teressa and didn't have to fight for her. "Destler, I don't have to explain to you," Erik said in a quiet, but dangerous voice. "But she has totally misinterpreted what went on out there. You should go after Ana. She is as despicable as you are." Erik wouldn't have said that except for his anger, and the fact that he thought Ana could probably get the best of Destler. "I did nothing untoward," Erik growled in that quiet voice. "And don't try to go after her. You'll never get anywhere. She lives with her protector who won't let anyone get near her..."
After Destler left, Erik sank down on one of the benches nearby in the hallway. He bent his head over and closed his eyes and put his head in his hands. What had he done that was so bad? If Teressa was this sensitive, indeed, if she jumped to the wrong conclusion like this...perhaps all the time... was she worth pursuing? Erik's head said no, but his heart disagreed. Not having that much experience with women and with being in love, Erik was confused and angry. He didn't know what to do. He felt utterly despondent.

Emilie could not believe all that she saw and heard. A lot had apparently happened in her absence and what she cared not to even pay attention to. Having stood upon the landing and out of sight as the verbal battle ensued. Now as an eerie quiet graced the halls once again, she strode from the landing to the banister slowly and stood there, gazing down to see only Lenoir seated upon a bench. She did not know what to do but she would not go to him. Heart break? Not really. Just utter disappointment and pity. Disappointment that Lenoir had become quite the womanizer and she was no longer his object of affections or obsession any longer. Pity that he had made a grand mistake far worse than when he kidnapped her those many years ago or to him, not that long ago.
Parting her lips as she released a sigh, just standing there gazing down at Lenoir. He had fallen from grace, harder than last time. He had gained a very good reputation in the Manor with many residents and now... now that reputation was tarnished. Finally looking away from Lenoir she slowly ascended the stairs. She would never see Lenoir in the same way again.

Edouard was walking down the wide marble staircase which led to the main floor. Suddenly he thought he heard voices. He stopped to listen, not sure at first who they were. All of them were shouting, although not at the same time. He leaned over the bannister, but couldn't see anything. He walked down a few more steps and still couldn't see anything, but as he listened to the angry voices, he knew two of them. Erik Destler and Erik Lenoir. They were at it again? Edouard had heard that after Destler had kidnapped the little blonde Christine, he and Lenoir had a terrible fight over another woman, a girl named Teressa. Since then, Lenoir had stayed away from Emilie, as far as he knew. That was certainly good news.
However, there was a third voice, a woman's voice. She, too, was angry and from what she said, her anger was directed toward Lenoir. Edouard wondered if the woman was Teressa, whom he had heard was Lenoir's love interest. It wasn't good if she was angry at Lenoir, he might go back to Emilie. He heard the woman leave and the two men speaking angrily. Finally it was quiet. One of them must have left. Curiosity getting the better of him, he went to the end of the staircase and walked the short ways down the hall and turned the corner. Only one man was still there. It was Lenoir. His body language said that he was utterly dejected. He was sitting on a bench with his head resting in his hands. He didn't even look up when Edouard approached him.
Edouard wasn't afraid to speak to the Phantom any more. They too had had angry words some time ago, over Emily. He hoped that was in the past. If Lenoir would leave Emilie alone, Edouard was sure that he could get along with the Phantom. He had been surprised at his bravery at fighting Destler. It appeared their emnity had not waned.
Edouard stood a short distance away from Lenoir and said, "Lenoir? Are you all right? You look a bit...dejected perhaps?"

Erik felt as if he couldn't move from the stone bench. Teressa was angry at him! And for what? For a mere joke...kissing Ana when they fell in the hay, pushed by her horse? He supposed that Teressa didn't see it that way, especially if she hadn't seen what led up to it. Apparently Teressa was a sensitive girl. Erik would have to be very careful what he said around her. That, of course, depending on if she took him back. Would she do that? Erik hadn't really started to court her yet, he had not had the chance to speak to her protector Lavalais to get his permission. This seemed over before it began. How could he get Teressa back? Was it even possible? Erik was feeling really worse than when he had first come to the mansion. After his first burst of depression over Christine, the manor had distracted him with his thoughts of getting away.
What was he to do now? It would do no good to go after Destler. It would only make Teressa more angry at him. Erik was a fighter when he had to be. And he had fought for Teressa. But now it was she that was scorning him. She didn't exactly seem ready to take up with Destler, but then he had found Destler comforting her after she became upset and hysterical because of what she thought she had seen. How could one deal with a woman like that? How did one deal with women at all? Erik really had no experience with women. Certainly, he had kissed a few of them since coming to the mansion, but what did it mean, really? He hadn't had any kind of relationship with anyone yet.
He heard footfalls and expected someone to pass him. He didn't even care. Whatever they thought, it didn't matter. All that mattered was Teressa. Erik had even dreamed about her... The footfalls stopped and he felt someone's eyes upon him. The former Phantom looked at the man who stood before him, almost as if he didn't recognize him. His eyes were a bit misty for a moment. Then the man spoke. It was Raoul Edouard de Chagny. What the hell did he want? That's all Erik needed ... another one of his enemies starting something.
He frowned, then said quietly, "de Chagny? What do you want?"

By the time she reached the top landing of the third floor, Emilie heard another voice below. At the banister, her hand casually upon it as he stood on the hall floor releasing her skirting and glanced over to see her Husband now talking to Lenoir. Bewildered as to why Edouard was even talking to her former Angel. The tone of her Husband's voice did not sound rather degrading or vicious like usual however Lenoir's sounded rather defensive and crude.
She stood at the top trying to listen and watch both men and yet wanted to stay unknown. Keeping calm and quiet as she listened from her lofty position. Things at the Manor were indeed changing.

Edouard wasn't quite sure how to go about this. Lenoir could easily punch him a couple of times and take off. However, Edouard was feeling brave tonight and he didn't think that Lenoir would hit him unless he told him to keep away from Emilie...which he seemed to be doing nicely without any coaxing from Edouard. So there was no problem there. The direct approach would undoubtedly work best.
Edouard smiled. "I'm looking for a bit of company. I on my way to the village. There's a place there where I've met some interesting people. They seem a bit fascinated with me, I suppose because of the time difference. Could be the clothing too. Seems to me they all dress a bit tatty. You know about the time difference, I'm sure...they're in the future. In any case, you look like you need some company too. Care to come to the village for a drink? It's a good place to learn about the folk who live in the village. Strange sort they are. Modern people think differently than we do. Quite interesting. What do you say Lenoir?"

Erik stared at de Chagny for quite a long moment. He was trying to figure out his game. What did the fellow have in mind? Would he try to have his revenge for the times Erik had run off with the Vicomtess? He studied the man's face for a moment. He seemed to be sincere. And he wasn't carrying any weapons that Erik could see. Although Erik always carried his Punjab lasso and his dagger. One never knew when one would be forced into combat. But he had no intention of using them unless it was self defense.
And what could it hurt to go with the Vicomte? Erik was so depressed now that he needed something, anything to make him forget Teressa, at least for a while until he could think of a way to woo her back to him. At this point, it looked pretty black.
Finally, Erik nodded. "Yes, why not?" He wasn't about to tell the Vicomte all his troubles and confide in him. No, that wasn't like Erik at all. Erik kept his secrets to himself....most of the time. But there was no reason to give de Chagny anything to hold over Erik's head. He didn't intend to.
Erik stood up and de Chagny walked toward the door. He asked if Erik wanted to ride horseback or take a carriage. "I much prefer a carriage. And' I'll drive it, if you don't mind." Erik had heard tell of the Vicomte imbibing a bit too much and he was not willing to be in a carriage accident if it could be helped. The Vicomte nodded. He didn't seem to care. The two men went to the stable and de Chagny hitched up one of the horses to a carriage and they got in, Erik driving the rig.
"I don't drink, you know," said Erik to the Vicomte. "Hardly anything past a glass of fine wine with dinner and that very rarely." The Vicomte nodded amiably. He seemed to be in a good mood, perhaps looking for ward to his friends in the village. The Phantom and the Vicomte spent most of the journey in silence and after a time, the lights of the village began to show. Erik hadn't been here in the darkness before. It was rather a lovely sight. If there had been snow, it would have looked like a Christmas card. Well, at least until you looked and saw all the modern automobiles...
Soon the Vicomte pointed down the street and Erik saw a sign which read, "The Schooner Steed" and there was a picture of a horse as a ship's figurehead. He brought the horse and carriage to the back of the building where there was some grazing area and he unhitched the horse. The place looked like an English pub, rather then a Bistro or restaurant, which is what he had thought the Vicomte was referring to. He hadn't noticed it on his previous trips to town for it was several blocks down from the place where they normally exited the forest. Erik followed de Chagny into the place.
