Teressa took hold of Lenoir's arm and tightly held his hand. Destler had stopped and that's all she'd needed. She gave a great sigh of relief, and leaned her head against Lenoir's. No one had gotten hurt...no one...Thank God.
"I don't know what's gotten into you two." Her tone was angry, confused, and hinted at emotional pain. "I'm sorry that I've caused you both to behave this way...But Messieurs, you must realize that I care enough about you both so I feel pained when I see one of you in pain! Please don't put me through something like this again...."

Teressa intervened between the two feuding men. Erik's heart sank when Teressa said that she cared about both of them. This wasn't what he wanted to hear. He wanted Teressa to think that he, Lenoir, was the most chivalrous of the two, the one who was more gracious and caring enough to try to make his opponent comfortable when he had been confined to the stocks. He wanted her to know that he would protecct her from even an evil like Destler. He wanted her to know that Destler was not up to any good. Teressa seemed so naiive when it came to Destler. All that Lenoir had gone through for the girl was probably just for naught. She didn't seem to see any difference in the two men.
Was he really as brutal as Destler? Perhaps he was. He had earlier killed without thought except for his own convenience. Maybe there wasn't any difference between the two of them.
However, he had to look at the facts. Teressa had stopped the fight, but now she was holding his hand and arm tightly. Not Destler's, no, Erik Lenoir's arm. Could it be that she was making her choice?
Teressa's tone, though, seemed angry and confused when she spoke. She included both of them in what she said. "No, no, Teressa, you misunderstand. I had to protect you...but, if you wish to go with Destler, that is up to you. I think that you don't know all of the facts, that you don't know what he is like, but nonetheless, you must make your choice. If you choose him, I shall be utterly devastated, but I shall not fight anymore and shall leave you to your chosen suitor..."

Stunned nearly frozen where he came to a sudden halt staring back at Teressa with blank eyes and breathing heavily. He could have harmed her or even killed her! She was so foolish to have done this act! What ever was she thinking?!? But as he listened to her words it was apparent to him that this was a losing battle. He noticed that she sided with him even if her words did not say so. She held Lenoir's arm. Blinking from time to time as he panted and tried to catch his breath. His poor heart ached once again at the loss of some to love. First Christine. Now... it was Teressa.
His eyes glared at Lenoir a moment before they shifted down to the stone flooring, a gasp as he relented and stepped back. Tossing aside the wood and paced a couple steps away. Chosen suitor. Those words hurt his poor mind as a hand came up to hold this throbbing head and closed his eyes. He wanted so much to silence Lenoir for the man was tearing at him like the claws of a bear.
"Go then," he snapped in a mutter. "Leave me be." His back turned to the both of them as he sorted himself through the torture devices that lay rusting and rotting within this chamber.

Teressa cringed. Destler was mad at her, she could tell. Perhaps it was best to do as he asked and leave him alone...She squeezed Lenoir's fingers, pulling him a little toward the door. She just wanted to get out of there, away from this, back to her home...
She let out a little frustrated huff. All this nonsense about choosing, taking sides, choose a suitor..what would either man gain from courting her anyway? Men were the most confusing creatures she'd ever encountered in her life.

Erik felt he had been very fair in allowing Teressa to choose which one of them she wanted. He never even thought that perhaps she wanted neither of them. He felt her squeeze his fingers and pull him toward the door. It would seem that she had chosen Lenoir over Destler.
Erik stopped at the door and bowed in mock courtesy. "Au revoir, Monsieur Destler. May we never meet again, or if we do, may we meet not in hatred, but in peace." He hoped his little show impressed Teressa. He just wished she could see how evil and scheming Destler could be. Of course he didn't even think that he, Lenoir, could be evil and scheming....
He really did care about her. And he didn't want to fight Destler any more. There could be no compromise between them. They mounted the stairs and Erik hoped Destler would not follow them to start something again. It was difficult to deal with someone who could not die. All Erik could do was to hurt the fellow or persuade him with words. Neither seemed to work.
Teressa and Erik reached the top of the stairs. He stopped and turned to her. "Teressa, I really care about you. I didn't really want to hurt Destler, but he's no good for you. He's evil and scheming and would only drag you into his intrigues. Perhaps he thinks he loves you, but..." Erik's voice trailed off, wanting desperately to tell her how he felt, but thinking this was not the right time. And if it were not the right time, things could go so very awry. He had fought so hard for Teressa, he didn't want to lose her because of a mere stumbling of the tongue.
