Christine stood wondering as She held out the Pascal candle for the congregation to light their own. How in the world was she going to manage to pull this off, especially if Raoul and Monsieur Lavalais were outside with their bickering for quite some time? It concerned her honestly. She knew that it would certainly not be a proper mass, but it pained her to go through one of the most important holidays of her faith without any sort of observation...
Thus, it was to both her surprise and to her delight when, as the candles were being lit, when Monsieur Raoul Edouard de Chagny came up and offered to assist with reading something./ “Oh, you would not mind, would you?” she whispered frantically. “Yes, there are actually quite a few readings. Umm.... What would you like to read? The Creation, the deliverance from the Red Sea, the valley of the dry bones, the story of salvation...?”
She anxiously awaited his answer. She needed to know quickly so she could continue on with the exsultet.

Christine seemed anxious, he thought, for an answer as to which reading or readings Edouard was amenable to doing. She rattled them off and he quickly tried to think what they were about. The Creation...God creating the world; Deliverance from the Red Sea...the Israelites with Moses as their leader, saved from the Egyptians by the parting of the Red Sea; the Dry Bones, a prophesy about resurrection; and the story of salvation, self explanatory. "Why don't you do Creation, I'll do the Red Sea, let's ask Lenoir to read the dry bones and see if one of the other men show up in time for the last one. If not, I'll do that too. What do you think?"
Edouard probably would have to read the third one if Lenoir wouldn't do it. He would have the whole first reading to try to convince him. If not, he might convince Emilie to do it.

Christine listened to his suggestion and gave a quick nod. “Oh, thank you, Monsieur, that would be greatly appreciated. I know that this isn't the most ideal of circumstances, but it's better than leaving the date ignored, I suppose...”
She managed a rushed smile before turning and processing the rest of the way up to the altar and placed the Pascal candle in its stand. She took a breath and, turning to face the Eastern wall where stood the altar, she began to chant the next part of the mass.
“Rejoice now, heavenly hosts and choirs of angels, and let your trumpets shout Salvation for the victory of our mighty King.
Rejoice and sing now, all the round earth, bright with a glorious splendor, for darkness has been vanquished by our eternal King.
Rejoice and be glad now, Mother Church, and let your holy courts, in radiant light, resound with the praises of your people.
All you who stand near this marvelous and holy flame, pray with me to God the Almighty for the grace to sing the worthy praise of this great light; through Jesus Christ his Son out Lord, who lives and reigns with him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen”

As soon as he had finished speaking with Christine, Edouard walked to the pew where Lenoir was sitting. Lenoir was holding his candle and appeared to be listening to the service. He was holding a Mass book, but it wasn't open.
Edouard whispered that Christine needed help with the readings. "She will do the firsts one, I will do the second and I was really hoping I could count on you to do the third one. Perhaps one of the other men will be back in time to do the fourth."

Erik saw Edouard de Chagny speak to Christine and then come to the back of the chapel. He expected that he was going to leave or talk to the other men outside, but he stopped at Erik's pew. Erik looked up, surprised. De Chagny asked Erik to do one of the readings.
Erik was more than surprised at the request, he was stunned. "You want me to read something...in a religious service...from the Bible?" Erik had no qualms about the actual reading itself, but he felt really awkward being asked to do it in a chapel...and reading from the Bible? He wondered if de Chagny were trying to embarrass him. But de Chagny looked sincere and he said Christine needed help.
"All right. I'll do it to help Christine. Where is it?" De Chagny told him which reading and Erik found it in the book. He waited for his turn to read.

Watching her Husband as he spoke with the golden hair Christine as she got comfortable upon the pew again. Listening to the young Christine as she proceeded with the Vigil but her eyes followed her Husband as he came towards her and she smiled. That smile melted to slight confusion was she watched Raoul Edouard walk on. Twisting as her sights followed him back to Lenoir's pew. Oh no! Her body stiffened and her eyes went wide. Fear trickled in awaiting a violent outburst from Raoul Edouard demanding that Lenoir leave or something related to her. Glancing skyward as she prayed silently for an instant.
Returning her eyes to look at Raoul Edouard and Lenoir still listening to the young Christine as she spoke. Shocked and tried not to show it. There was no violent outburst or any discord between her Husband and her Angel. Frozen in the position at the miracle that unfolded before her. There was hope yet! Tears welled in her eyes but blinked several times to stop them. She did not want others to see that she was touched by such a moment. Inhaling swiftly and deeply as she tried to hide that smile and looked away then turned back around to face Christine and repeated "Amen." God was good.

Christine noticed as she was chanting that Monsieur Edouard had moved to the back of the chapel where Monsieur Lenoir was seated. She honestly hoped that he would be willing to help with one of the readings. This vigil was so much for her to have to handle on her own. The absence of both her fiancé and monsieur Lavalais was making things even more difficult. She could use any scrap of help she could get at this point...
Hoping and paying that this whole thing would work out for the better in the end, she continued on with her chanting, “The Lord be with you[/i],” and waited for a response.

"Monsieur, I can assure you, I have no fight with you. I do not mean you or your fiancée any harm." Erik implored with the young man. He didn't want to cause any harm to either of them, regardless of how much he felt for Christine. Now, if he was asked to convey his opinion about the young man's impending marriage to Christine, he might have a few things to say, but he still didn't intend to physically harm anyone.
Why must he be mistaken for this other Erik by EVERYONE? He didn't like having this doppelgänger. It only caused him trouble, and no one seemed to like him. Why couldn't he just be himself and recognized as such?

Edouard was so engrossed in perusing the lesson he was to give, that he forgot himself. He looked up quickly as Christine intoned the response herself after a lengthy silence. He realized the congregation, all three of them, were supposed to respond, And also with you.... After Christine's response, he sang it after her, elbowing Emilie gently so that she too would sing.
Again, Edouard wondered where the other men were and when they woul,d be coming back. He knew Christine had hoped for some music. He would have asked Lenoir to play the organ, except they were all hoping Lavalais would re-enter the chapel. He could still hear vague voices outside the door. It was ridiculous that they were arguing, this was not supposed to create an argument. Even Lenoir was behaving well tonight. He had hardly expected that when the former Phantom had entered the Chapel.

Christine let out a sigh of relief when she finally hear d the appropriate response And also with you. Thank goodness she wasn't completely alone in this. Her fiancé and Monsieur Lavalais were still outside of the chapel, and one could hear bits and pieces of the harsh words that passed between the,m. It hurt a bit, knowing that they were too involved in their dispute to aid her in something which they had both promised to, and which Raoul at least knew was extremely important to her.
The vigil must continue though, with or without them. She would just have to improvise a bit if things really came down to the wire. Hopefully those men would be done arguing soon enough... Christine decided in the mean time to continue on with the chanting. “Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.[/i]”

Erik had missed the previous response, he had been reading over the lesson he was to give in a few minutes. He vaguely heard Christine in tone the response herself after waiting a lengthy period of time. He heard Edouard repeat it and quickly flipped open the book.
Erik quickly flipped the pages back and forth and found the next intonation that Christine was giving, Let us give thanks to the Lord our God, she sang. The response was, It is right to give Him thanks and praise. Erik sang it out in his clear, bright tenor voice, a bit louder than he needed to, for he fully expected no one else would join in.

Christine couldn't help but to jump a little with the next response. Considering that the first one had been nearly non-existent, she certainly had not expected the second to be so unnecessarily loud. She pressed a hand to her heart for a moment to cal herself from that little fright before continuing on with the cantoral part.
“It is truly right and good, always and everywhere, with our whole heart and mind and voice, to praise you, the invisible, almighty, and eternal God, and your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Pascal Lamb, who at the feast of the Passover paid for us the debt of Adam's sin, and by his blood delivered your faithful people.
This is the night when you brought our fathers, the children of Israel, out of bondage in Egypt, and led them through the Red Sea on dry land.
This is the night, wen all who believe in Christ are delivered from the gloom of sin, and are restored to the grace of holiness of life.
This is the night when Christ broke the bonds of death and hell, and rose victorious from the grave. How wonderful and beyond our knowing, O God, is your mercy and loving-kindness to us, that to redeem a slave you gave a son.
How holy is this night, when wickedness is put to flight, and sin is washed away. It restores innocence to the fallen, and joy to those who mourn. It casts out pride and hatred, and brings peace and concord.
How blessed is this night, when earth and heaven are joined and man is reconciled to God.
Holy Father, accept our evening sacrifice, the offering of this candle in your honor. May it shine continually to drive away all darkness. May Christ, the Morning Star who knows no setting, find it ever burning – he who gives light to all creation, and who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen”

Keeping her eyes upon the golden hair Christine once her eyes returned forward. Listening to her words and chanting with interest as she had not witnessed another religious ceremony. And yet she missed what she was suppose to do. How was she suppose to know? Well, silly her! Snapped to as she looked at Raoul when he replied to her words. She replied swiftly in retun, "And also with you." Looking at him rather stunned. He was Catholic?
She returned her gaze forward and listened to Christine, replying when her Husband did as well albeit softly since she was unaware of what to do. Even if there was a paper that told her. Oh, this will be long and testy. She will do her best to get through it.

((Next post I'll have her do the first reading))
Everything seemed to be running fairly smoothly, other than the fact that neither Monsieur Lavalais, not her fiancé had returned from their little quarrel outside. She really hoped that they would come soon. She could not pull this off without them, and it pained her to know that they had specifically chosen not to listen to her pleas for them to stop...
Since the chanting was finished for the time being at least, Christine continued on, now speaking, hoping that the two men would reenter soon enough. “Let us hear the record of God's saving deeds in history, how he saved his people in ages past; and let us pray that our God will bring each of us to the fullness of redemption.” And she made her way to the podium where sat the Holy scriptures in preparation to begin the first reading, which was the story of creation.
