“Sounds, notes.... accidents,” she replied when he asked why people thought that there was a ghost. Yes, there had indeed been many accidents. sets falling, chandeliers falling.... she really did hope that he wouldn't press any further. She didn't wish to elaborate upon the two most recent things she had seen – the death of the stage hand, Joseph Buquet, and her own experience with the chandelier. She closed her eyes for a moment in effort to keep cool and then opened them and offered a small smile of reassurance. It was true that now she knew there was no ghost, but a small part of her almost wished there was. It would have put her a little more at ease on all plains of this situation.
“I'm sorry to hear Raoul hasn't had much for you to do recently. I... I'm not entirely sure why he specifically chose to have a job, but I suspect it has something to do with where we are. He works at a school, teaching. I'm actually going to work soon, too, ironically. I work at an aquarium in the village..” She thought for a moment when he asked her if there was anything at all that he could do for her. “I... I don't off the top of my head, but I'm sure that we can come up for something for you to do. Umm.... What do you like to do?”

Christine told Alfred about the reasons people thought there was a ghost in the opera house, but she didn't wish to elaborate, at least it seemed so to Alfred. Being always the diplomatic fellow, he didn't continue to ask any questions. Although it piqued his interrest and he wondered if there was any one from whom he could find out more.
"Perhaps Master Raoul will need some help later..." his voice trailed off. Maybe this was Alfred's chance to do something that he wished to do. Something different than his man servant position. He looked directly at Christine and smiled. "Perhaps it would do me well to look for a position in the village. I have never been there...are there many open positions?" Alfred paused for a moment. "It would probably do me well to visit the village and see what it's like. Of course I would get Master Raoul's permission to leave his service, but would always come back should he need me..." Alfred was mulling his ideas about out loud.
Christine said she had procured a position in an aquarium in the village. "What do you do in this position, Miss Daaé?"

The young woman's face brightened when Alfred said that it would do him good to look into a position at the village. “Oh! The village is wonderful. It's so different from back home in Paris, but so exciting! It's like entering a whole new world! From what I've seen and heard, there are quite a few positions. I see “help Wanted” ads in windows all the time when I'm there.”
Alfred asked Christine about her position in the village. “Well,” she said, “It's a little difficult to explain at first... And honestly you're probably going to think it rather silly.... but... I'm a mermaid.”
It was an awkward sentence really. Christine had found that even among the people she'd met in the village, many of them didn't realize what it was to be a 'professional mermaid.' She did underwater dance shows at the aquarium and got to dress up in a mermaid suit, which consisted of her fin and top. It was a lot of fun, really. When she wasn't diving under the water, she got to sing for the visitors and shake hands with and talk to little girls with a liking for the mythical underwater creatures.

Christine told Alfred that she was a mermaid. He looked surprised and also delightedly amused. "A mermaid. That sounds very interesting. I have not as yet been to the village. How is it that you work as a mermaid?" He wondered how one could be paid for being a mermaid. It was quite baffling.
Alfred thought for a moment about getting another position himself. Obviously Master Raoul didn't need him if he was working himself in the village. And Alfred was rather bored. There wasn't a lot to do at the mansion. He could find himself a whole new career. He couldn't imagine what it could be.
"Do you know if there is a newspaper delivered to the mansion? Or perhaps I shall have to go to the village myself to find out what positions are open. I am sure I can do most anything. I just do not know what it is that I would wish to do. One becomes stuck in a thought pattern, a rut, if you will, after so many years of doing the same type of work. But indeed, the work of a servant, especially a servant who is used to oversee a household, has learned many skills. So I expect that there will be something that shall catch my fancy."
"And I am sure, when I visit the village, I shall stop at the aquarium to see you as a mermaid. I shall be interesed in seeing the other fish there too, but I am sure you shall be the loveliest fish of all."

“I sometimes see newspapers here in the library, actually,” Christine said, gesturing around. “I couldn't tell you how current they are though, or if they advertise any jobs. I would assume that they do, though I've never really bothered to read... If you'd like, I can pick up a paper for you while I'm at the village. You might try watching television though. It's this wonderful box thing that Raoul showed me, with a moving picture screen that lets you see and hear things. They show job listings on there sometimes. That's how I found out about the aquarium, actually.”
She smiled when Alfred asked her about her job as a mermaid. “Oh, it's loads of fun!” she explained. “I get to dress up in a special mermaid costume and swim in one of the big tanks. I get to do underwater dancing as a mermaid and get to greet and speak to the guests, and take pictures with them. Sometimes a guest will ask me to sing for them. My mermaid name is 'Misty.' I wanted to be 'Ariel,' but they wouldn't let me. Something about a copyright infringement... But oh well. It's fun either way. There are a few other mermaids too, actually.”
And then, she could not help but to smile brighter and begin to blush a bit as well. She chuckled a bit. “Well, when you do come to visit, be sure to tell them that you're a friend of mine.”

Alfred smiled. "If you do happen to pick up a newspaper, that would indeed be splendid." He paused, frowning just a bit. "Tele-- vision? Whatever could that be? I have not heard of such a thing. It must be one of the new inventions that are happening every day in this Victorian day and age..." Alfred stopped then and laughed, a bit embarrassed. "I beg your pardon, I have forgotten the world has advanced a bit since I last glanced at it. I expect our beloved Queen is rather...eh.... not alive I expect...any more...." He looked at her, still a bit self conscious."
"So going back to this magic box of yours...you say we have one in the manor? Where might I find it, if I may be so bold as to ask? I should indeed be interested such a strange invention."
Christine described her job. "It sounds lovely and something that you would be well suited for. What with your lovely voice and pretty face, you must certainly woo the customers! Misty...I shall remember that and ask for you when I visit. And certainly I shall mention I am a friend of yours. It is very good of you to call me a friend, Mademoiselle Daaé."
"I shall be much interested in a job in the village. Now that I am thinking about it, I am rather excited at the prospect. Tell me, how do you travel to and from the village every day? Do you ride a horse, take a carriage or walk?"

Alfred asked Christine what television was and she was a little shocked for a moment. She had forgotten that he had probably not been there as long as she had, and perhaps Raoul had not explained as much of this modern world to him as he had explained to her. From what Alfred had said, it seemed as if the two of them had come across each other here at the manor...
She smiled, dismissing the little falter and continued to explain. “It's an invention from this future, yes. There are a few in the manor. In fact, there's a room just a couple door down from the library with one. It really is very interesting. It shows you all sorts of neat things. My favorite things it shows are movies, but there are lots of other things as well.”
Christine couldn't help but to let out a chuckle when Alfred continued to speak. “Of course you're a friend, Alfred. Why wouldn't you be? And I'll definitely be looking forward o seeing you when you visit the aquarium. I started out walking, though I use a bicycle now to get there. It's not too terribly far away – about a mile or so.”

Alfred smiled and rubbed his hands together in anticipation. "Only about a mile, you say. Well sure I shall go there then. And often. I walk every day you know. I have, for years. In fact, perhaps I shall go tomorrow. And you do not need to bring me a newspaper. Perhaps I shall buy one when i am there and .....is there a place to purchase lunch? Somewhere not terribly expensive?"
And this tele-vision invention, perhaps you would show me how to work the contraption, that is if you are not busy some time. I could take a few moments any time, for as I said, there is very little to keep me occupied at the mansion. With Master Raoul spending so much time away, there is not much I have to do for him any more. Of course it would be delightful to help out any of the other manor residents, should they need my services. Do you happen to know anyone who does? At least until I procure a position in the village." Alfred was very excited at the prospect of a new position and he couldn't help showing his enthusiasm.

Christine smiled at Alfred as he spoke. He seemed rather pleased at the idea of the village being so near to them. He asked her if there was a place to buy lunch that wasn't terribly expensive – a question to which she grinned instantly and gave a clap in delight. “Oh! There most certainly are! There is a place called 'MacDonalds' and one called 'Nandos'.... but my absolute favorite place to go for lunch is called 'Starbucks'. They have the most amazing coffee, and then you can get salads, and pastries, and fruit cups and yoghurt.... It's great!”
“Oh, I could certainly show you how the tele works. It's simple, really. And it can be a lot of fun, too! It's like going to the theatre, but without having to leave home. Rather convenient, if I do say so, myself. As to people in the manor who need help... I'm sorry... There's no one who comes to mind right off the... wait a minute!...”
An idea popped into her head. She was sure that Raoul wouldn't approve of it, but it might give Alfred something to do (which would surely make him happy) and it would certainly be of much help to...
“I... I know a man who could use some help. But you must swear to me that you will never breathe a word of this to Raoul. He... Well... The two of them.... They don't exactly see eye to eye...”

Christine was really being so helpful. She gave Alfred the names of several establishments in town where he could eat for a reasonable price."I shall certainly look into that, Miss Christine. I am most appreciative. I shall look forward to a trip to the village."
"The television, they have one here? I would be delighted if you could show me," said Alfred. "Like going to the theatre without leaving home...I can't imagine, but it truly sounds intriguing..."
She started thinking, in answer to his inquiry, about who might need help at the mansion. She thought of someone then, who could use some help. But it almost seemed to be a secret. She seemed to think this person and de Chagny did not see eye to eye. "Yes of course, I would be willing to help whenever needed and you know I am not one to spread tales or rumours, or even the bare truth when it would not be appropriate. Who is this mysterious person then, Miss Christine?"

Christine nodded cheerfully when Alfred asked about the television. “Oh, it really is wonderful! Here – follow me. It's just in the other room.” She gestured for Alfred to follow her and then moved toward the door of the library, looking back at him over her shoulder before she pushed it open and stepped out.
“Well... He's my voice teacher... His name is Erik Lenoir. He has been trying to restore the opera house here, but keeps mentioning that he's short on help for the project. I don't know if he's found anyone to help him since he last told me, but he certainly could use some assistance in the project... Please don't tell Raoul though... They... they don't particularly like one another...”

Alfred smiled when Svenna mentioned helping Erik Lenoir with the opera house restoration. "That may be a very good idea, I certainly will help wherever I can. I think though, that I would like very much to procure a job in the village. If I do not, I will certainly see M. Lenoir. I don't think I know him."
Alfred followed Svenna to the door and held the door as she passed through. "You say he's your music teacher? I didn't know you had one..." He paused. "And are you expecting to sing at the opera when it is open? I do hope so. I miss the opera. There's nothing like it. "
Alfred continued to follow her. "And this...tele...vision is nearby? I am quite interested to find out what it does...I cannot imagine..."

It brought a smile to the young woman’s face when Alfred said that he would help her teacher, without having had asked any further questions. She knew that Raoul surely would have been quite wary about having anything to do with Erik, but it was good to see that Alfred trusted her judgment despite what Raoul may or may not have told him… unless by some off chance Raoul had not mentioned Lenoir to Alfred at all. Either way, it was good to feel trusted.
“Yes, he has been teaching me for some time now… and that’s all right. It’s not exactly something I’ve particularly broadcasted… Yes, he wants me to sing at the opera when the restorations are complete. I’m excited about it, really.”
And then he asked her again about the television. “Yes, this way. Keep following me…” She led him down the hall a bit of a way’s away and then stopped at a certain door and opened it up, flipping the little switch that turned on the lights before peering inside. “Ah! Here we are! This is one of the rooms that has one." She opened up the door fully and then stepped in and gestured to a medium-sized black box with a glass screen sitting on a sort of odd-looking shelf-desk combination. “Television.”

"Where would I be able to find this Lenoir, your teacher, to speak to him? Does he live here then?" asked Alfred. "Or does he make the trip from the village? "
Quite interested to find out what this new "television" invention was like, Alfred followed Svenna into a room nearby. She lit the room simply by flipping a switch and the electric lights turned themselves on. Much easier than lighting every gas lamp with a match and turnng it up to the right sized flame. He had seen the electric lights in a few other rooms, but it was quite astonishing.
Svenna indicated a black box with a window. It was small enough to sit on a desk. It was puzzling. "And what exactly can one do with this?" Alfred. puzzled, still couldn't imagine. The new inventions in the mansion never ceased to amaze him.

“Yes, he lives here in the Manor,” Christine said when Alfred asked her whether or not Erik Lenoir lived in the Manor. “He’s actually been my teacher long before I ever came here. A few years now…”
She couldn’t help but to let out a small giggle when he asked her what one was to do with the television. “You watch stuff on it. Here, look—” she picked up the remote and pressed the big red power button at the top, pointing it at the television. No sooner had she done so than a picture flickered onto the screen and voices could be hears speaking in English about the weather for the next week. “Ta-da!”
