With those mismatched eyes, she gazed back at Lenoir with nearly a hard look as though she were going to reply to his position with being on stage but instead she kept silent. After all, his choice. It was his life. She had no right to meddle with it.
Eating what she could, but only eating about half of her plate full. Nodding in response to his statement that it could feed a small army. She thought the same. "It's good, but not as good as my mama would make it." Obviously boasting her mother's cooking. Indeed it was a lot of food. Looking up at Lenoir then at the Server and practically brightened at the to go box. Well, wasn't that a concept! Take the food with you instead of wasting it! "Make that two boxes, please"
Nodding again, "It's still good wine," and took another drink as she smiled while looking at Lenoir. Finishing up her glass of wine then nodded but didn't get a word out as the payment was being negotiated between Lenoir and the Server. All was then good. Standing up from her seat with barely a glance around them as she moved towards Lenoir's side to leave the restaurant so they could return to the Manor. "Thank you, Mister Lenoir, for a rather enjoyable day." Smiling at him, "And the clothes."

Erik gazed for a moment into Maria's mismatched eyes. He liked them. They weren't as odd as his and they were very pretty. He smiled at her. Then the waitress came with their take home boxes and Erik paid the bill. Then they were ready to go.
Maria thanked him for the lovely day and the clothing for which he had loaned her money. "You are quite welcome and I thank you for your company, Miss Gianelli." They left the restaurant and walked to the street. To Erik's relief, there were not as many automobiles on the street as usual, but still a few that whizzed by at amazing speeds. It looked like many of the shops had closed and only the restaurants and other such establishments were still open. Erik, without asking, took her hand as they crossed the street. He felt she was under his protection while she was with her and he still didn't feel completely safe crossing the busy street.
When they arrived at the other side, he apologised. "I am sorry, Miss Gianelli, for taking your hand without warning. It's just that the street ... the automobiles...they seem to be driving at ridiculous speeds and I wonder if the drivers are even watching where they are going."
"May I help you up in the carraige, Miss Gianelli? And then I will harness the horse." He brought the horse over to the carriage and harnessed it and then climbed to the driver's seat of the carriage.
They started at a leisurely pace through the forest. Erik lit the two lanterns hanging from the edges of the carriage so they could see where they were going. "It was a lovely day, Miss Gianelli, thanks to your company. I accomplished what I had to do and again, am amazed at the strangeness of this village and their customs. It seems completely a world away from what I am used to."

Despite his gazing into her odd eyes, Maria didn't shy away but smiled. Lenoir was rather interesting to say the least and she did indeed enjoy his company and he was rather gracious, if not generous.
Diverting her gaze to look at the server a moment then to the containers left. Dumping her leftover meal into the container. What a brilliant idea.
Leaving the Restaurant with Lenoir and glanced about at the modern setting. It was so rich and different. Cleaner, too. The streets were not constantly line with loose women of the night. This was such a calm setting that it put her immediately at ease. Turning her eyes to look at her hand as Lenoir took it, held it, and walked across the street like that. It baffled her and nearly made her mind numb. How bold of him to take her hand! Usually such a gesture was for Sweethearts. Did he have those particular intentions? On the other side of the street, she got her answer and it relaxed her. He was fearful of the vehicles. This caused a slight smile upon her lips as she gazed in front of her. "No different than someone on a horse or a carriage." then turned to look at Lenoir with a smile. Hoping that he would at least relax and accept this world they now lived in.
Coming to the carriage and so glad that she was in these modern clothes instead of that gawdy dress. The comfort of the denims and blouse made getting into the carriage so much easier. "Yes, thank you, Mister Lenoir." Smiling at the masked gentleman.
As the carriage took them back to the Manor, she looked about and enjoyed the evening air with such a calm, and some would say romantic, setting. But she was not all that bold enough yet to cave to men. She was a tough nut to crack and get to fancy a man. Turned to look at Lenoir with a pleasant slight smile. "My pleasure, Mister Lenoir. I'm glad the day has been very productive." Watching him a little more, "All the more reason to explore it." Then smiles. Ahead, she could see the faint outline of the Manor. They were not that far away now.

Maria was very lovely company on the way back as she had been throughout the whole trip. It had been an adventure, although he had been there before. But a journey into the future...how many people could say that they could take such a journey? Well, anyone at the mansion could, most likely, still the number of people at the mansion was only a few. In some ways, even though he still considered himself a prisoner at the mansion, he felt lucky to hae seen this future time. And even though the mansion also existed in this future time, it was good to be back home.
Home? He almost startled himself when he realized he was thinking of the mansion as home. Yes, his home under the opera existed there...how, he didn't know. But that made all the difference. And it seemed the evil forces of the mansion did not penetrate to his lair. At least he hoped not. If they did, it would make life extremely unbearable.
After quite a long ride, they began to see the outline of the mansion. Some lights were even visible in the windows. It looked rather inviting. Erik almost laughed aloud at the thought. Well, if he were to spend the rest of his days there, it might as well be home. That was a solemn thought. But better than disappearing into oblivion as one of the ghosts had told him could happen if he wandered too far from the edges of the village. Perhaps tehre was a way. Perhaps there was something in the library or in that strange little machine that Roselin kept in her room. Perhaps a way to defeat the time anomaly. But he was too tired now to even think a bout that. The thought of getting back to his lair comforted him.
Thtey arrived at the mansion and Erik headed for the coach house. He backed the carriage inside and offered a hand to Maria. He unharnessed the horse and led him into the stable, in his stall for the night. He rejoined Maria and said, "If you would care for me to, I shall walk you to your suite." They reached the door and Erik held it open for Maria.

The sight of the Manor in the dim moonlight was a sight to behold. Almost romantic and calm which helped to ease her thoughts and ignorance to the evils that lay within.
Waiting for Lenoir after getting out of the carriage and walking from the stables and carriage house towards the massive Manor. Turning her head to look at him a moment before she smiled warmly and returned her gaze to before them. "I would like that, Mister Lenoir." then smiled at him with a coy smile. Despite his masked appearance he was an utter Gentleman and she could not have been in better company. Thanking him once more as he held the door open for her and she strode inside then made her way casually to her room.

Walking back to the mansion with Maria, he glanced at her. She had been a perfect companion to take to the village and it had been a quiet and relaxing time for Erik. Some of the other mansion residents tended to set his nerves on edge. Not Maria. She of the two colour exotic eyes. He had never met anyone with mismatched eyes before. It gave them something in common.A little oddity they shared.
Erik held the door open for Maria. They started down one of the long halls to reach the staircase to the upper floors. "Tell me, Miss Gianelli, do you feel at ease in the mansion? Do you feel comfortable? Or is there a small uneasy sense at the pit of your stomach? I don't really know why I bring this up. It may be only a feeling that I have. I feel completely comfortable in my own home, but there are times when I feel a bit uneasy. I am sure your suite is completly like home for you though..."
Erik wondered if she had experienced any frightening feelings since being at the mansion, even though she had been there only a short time. He often felt the influence of the ghosts, more often the ones who were up to no good. The lovely ghosts were another story.
"But I must say, it is a lovely place to stay. It's beautiful and many of the people are very likeable." Erik smiled at Maria as he said this, unaware that she could very well read more into his statement than he really meant.
They turned and walked down another hallway and then took the massive marble staircase leading to the upper floors.

Escorted by Lenoir through the hallways and corridors of the Manor towards the wing of the women's suites. She greatly enjoyed his company ever since he found her in the dark, damp tunnels below. Slowly shaking her head. "I've not been here long enough really to notice, Mister Lenoir," looking at him a moment but there was no smile only a slightly bewildered look. And it was true, she had not been here long enough to really know what he was talking about.
Then the intriguing change of how this place was charming. She smiled a little. "My room is nice. Far nicer actually than most places I have lived." Glancing at him for a moment. "I hope I can meet some of the others who live here."
Through the halls, up stairs, down corridors, around corners. Finally walking to the door to her room. She stopped then turned to face Lenoir. "I thank you, Mister Lenoir, for finding me. As well as dinner and the clothes plus a rather enjoyable day." Smiling with a pleasant look upon her face. Hesitating a moment as she watched him then leaned in to kiss his left cheek. "Good night." Opened the door and went into her suite.

As they stood in front of Maria's door in the mansion, she thanked him for finding her, and for the dinner and clothing. "I too had a very nice time. It was relaxing for me. Perhaps we shall do this again some time." He added, "I have no doubt that you will meet many more of the residents of the mansion. Most of them are quite amenable. I used to keep very much to myself before I came here, if you can believe that. I have become much more outgoing after meeting some of the people here, most of whom do not disparage me." Then Maria surprised him. She leaned in and kissed his left cheek. It was completely unexpected and Erik smiled and her and kissed her back on the cheek. She said good night and he nodded and said the same. She went inside and closed the door. Erik walked back to his lair, and he touched his left cheek and smiled. Maria had not been afraid to kiss him. Perhaps the mansion was a good place to be... THE END
