"Mother, I don't want to do this." Young Crystal whispered to her mother, glancing in the other room. There was a wealthy looking man on the couch, drinking a beer. Drinking made Crystal sick, which was another reason why she didn't want to have anything to do with this man... Even if it was only an hour he wanted.
"Too bad, you know you have to. Especially this one!" Her mother's voice was stern. "He is very wealthy, and.. handsome." Her tone turned blissful.
Crystal rolled her eyes. Her mother seemed to enjoy her job way too much. "Well, if you think so highly of him, you do it!" She started to walk away. There was no way her mother was letting her get away that easily. She grabbed her arm tightly, making her daughter wince.
The man in the other room heard and sighed. He called out, sounding annoyed with his thick, English accent, "Are you almost done over there? I do not like to be kept waiting!"
"Coming!" The woman called cheerfully before her voice became low and angry when she spoke to Crystal, "Listen, you little brat, I can't afford to have you picking and choosing who you want to do business with and come to think of it, neither can you. Everyone in this family has to pitch in. If you don't do this with us and we grow so poor that we are starving even more than we already are, it will all be on your hands! Do you hear me? Your hands!" She let go of her arm. "Make your choice!"
Crystal pondered this. The woman was right. Even though she didn't want to do this, and she was just a child, she couldn't afford to have all play and no work... This kind of work that made her feel so disgusting, especially when she tried to fight, was no exception.
"..Fine." She mumbled in a weak voice.
Her mother grinned and called back out to the man. "We're ready!" After taking one more gulp of his beer, then setting it down, the man walked over to them. "Hello, lass."
Crystal tried to force a smile. "Shall we go then?" Her mother spoke once more, leading the both of them upstairs to one of the few rooms. "I hope this will suit your needs. There you go." The man walked in, but Crys was hesitant.
"Crystal... Go inside. Be nice to the gentleman." She glanced up at her mother before going inside, yet a part of her stayed behind.
That part of her always left her body before these situations. It was, in a way, her soul, and even from outside, it heard everything.
Crystal shot up from the pillow, panting. Another nightmare. They were common, though they never ceased to scare her. Add on the fact that they were based on true events. Events that she wished were erased from her history. But, of course, that couldn't happen. Unfortunately, the past couldn't be changed.
She sighed deeply and threw the covers off of her, putting her head in her hands and closing her eyes for a moment. The dream had not yet escaped her mind. How she wished it would.
Perhaps, a walk would be good? Some fresh air always helped to ease her mind. It was late, though. Oh, no matter, it's not like anyone would be out anyway. Crystal changed into her dark purple short-sleeved shirt and her black shorts, put on her sneakers and walked out of her room.
After a short while of walking through the halls of the manor, she finally reached the door that led to the gardens. She stepped outside, taking in a deep breath of the air before beginning her walk.
It was ironic, really, that she suddenly enjoyed the outdoors. Usually, she had no desire to wander outside of her room. One reason being that she had better things to do than to skip around in the outside world, and another being that she disliked people. She just didn't. Solitude helped her stay sane. Well, on a certain level, at least.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, it seemed, there was a crack. Probably a twig or something. Wait, twigs didn't snap on their own, that must have meant...
Damn, a person, she thought. She sighed in annoyance and turned around. "Hello?" She called out. "Is anyone there? ..I can hear you, you know."
