The tender little maid's eyes widened a bit when she saw Erik shaking from his anger. She gently reached out a hand to touch his own as she sat in a chair beside him. She was a little afraid but her concern for Lenoir wellbeing overrode her fear. "Well," She began, trying to make the best of this situation. She did not like to see the worst in people and thought this would be a way for her to bring out the brighter side of this intrusion. "Perhaps she did not mean to be so crude towards you, Erik. I did hear her insult you, but maybe she was trying to be funny? Though I will admit, I do not see how it could be funny… Oui, Erik. That would be a good idea to go elsewhere. Maybe we could go back to your 'lair' as you called it? But I do not see it as a lair. It is quite lovely and not a frightening place as that name suggests."
Adina glared at Lu and frowned angrily. "Madam, please! You are not helping this situation with your insults! Forgive me if I seem rude, but this is a private conversation and I would most appreciate it if you left us both to speak alone." She gave a quick curtsey and turned back to Lenoir. All she wanted was to keep him calm so that nothing were to happen should Erik become further angered. She cared very much for the gentleman; he had been nothing but kind to her and she appreciated that beyond anything.

"If you'd like to come down to my home....I do not call it lair. That is the name the people gave it who are ignorant of me. They know nothing of me and when they refer to it as a lair it is because they see me as a monster, an animal. So I just refer to it as my home or residence, even though it is a bit unorthodox." Erik had calmed down now, speaking to Adina. He touched her hand. "I thank you for being a calming influence. I tend to have a bit of a temper sometimes," That was an understatement. Erik had a terrible temper and it could flare quickly and unexpectedly. Adina had only seen a tiny bit of his temper. He had been quite civil this time.
Erik finished his tea and offered to take Adina's cup to the kitchen also. He did so and returned. He stood at the table looking at Adina, noticing she was not wearing her locket. "May I help you put your locket about your neck, Adina? It looks lovely on you..."

"Oh. Do forgive me then, Erik. I did not mean to insult your home in any way. At least, I do not hope you think I meant any insult." She paused and felt her heart sink a bit before Erik reached out to touch her hand. She did not pull back; she did not want to. She only smiled up at him and finished her tea. Her thumb gently caressed the back of Erik's hand almost unconsciously. Who knew such a small gesture could bring one such great comfort? "It saddens me... That there are people who are that ignorant. I do not see you as a monster or an animal. You are such a kind and generous man. You helped me when I was lost and all alone. And that makes you one of-... Well, the only man that I have been so honored to meet."
Adina smiled and held out her tea cup to Erik before rising from her seat. She blushed a little and gave a small giggle when he mentioned how lovely her locket looked when she wore it. "Merci, Erik. That would be wonderful." The two of them went back to the kitchen only to notice that the woman, Lu, was no longer there. But no matter. Adina went over to the counter where she had left her locket only to find that....
"It's gone!" She gasped, looking about on the countertop and then the floor to make sure it did not fall. "Mon Dieu! Oh, Erik, it's gone! My locket! Non, non, non! It was the only thing that I had to remember my màmà... No, this is terrible! Where could it be?"

"I know you didn't wish to insult my home, or me. I cannot even imagine you doing so. It was just that I wanted to tell you that that's not a word I use to refer to my home, although it appears that many do." He smiled as she carressed the back of his hand with her thumb. It was such a sweet gesture. "And thank you for your kind words."
Smiling when Erik complimented her on her locket, Adina and Erik went back to the kitchen to retrieve the locket. It was not where Adina had left it, and she looked on the floor. Erik helped her by checking all the surfaces and under the table and other places. It seemed to have disappeared. "It couldn't have fallen in the sink, there is a strainer here which would catch anything before it went down the drain. Did you leave it in the pantry?"
Then Erik frowned. He glanced at Adina as he said, " That Dallas woman who continually insulted me; I expect she pocketed the locket when we left the kitchen. You had left it there when we came into the dining room, hadn't you?"
Adina seemed very upset over the loss of the locket. She said it was the only thing she had by which to remember her mother. "Ill get it back for you, Adina. I expect she has a suite with the women's section in the dormitories. I shall give Miss Dallas a piece of my mind. If you'd rather stay here, you may, dear. This may not be a lovely scene."

Adina smiled at Erik and bowed her head. "Of course, Erik. I only wish that there were more people like us: caring, understanding, accepting." She looked down at the table and continued to stroke the back of his hand with her thumb. But her happy composure turned to one of sorrow when she came to find her locket missing.
"Oh, Erik," She said after what seemed like hours of searching the kitchen for her locket. She sat in a chair and sighed, her heart sinking as tears welled up in her eyes. That locket held the only memory of her mother that Adina would ever have or remember. There were no other drawings, portraits, or memories that she held because her mother died giving birth to her. She shook her head and looked up at Erik. "N-No, I do not believe I left it in the pantry. The teapot and tea leaves were already sitting out. on the counter."
But then Erik mentioned that woman. Lu… Could she have taken it? "Oui, Erik. I did leave it in the kitchen… But why? Why would she steal it? I do not believe the silver has much value.. Does it?" She looked around once more then sighed and wiped away tears welling up in her eyes.
"Erik," She said softly, getting up and going to touch his arm. "Please… Do not do anything hasty. I want to come with you, perhaps I can explain the sentiment the locket means to me. Then, just then, she may understand and give it back to me." She took Erik's hand and kissed it before looking back up at him. "Thank-you for being so kind. You are like a knight from my time. Le chevalier…"

Adina was so admiring of Erik... he liked that, but felt it wasn't really true. Certainly he was always kind and understanding with Adina. But with some other people, his temper could flare and he coudl be rude and sarcastic. "Adina, you bring out the best in me. Truly you do." And then she noticed her locket was missing.
"Adina, I expect the girl took it simply becasue it was there and she fancied it." He didn't mention to her that he was a rather good pickpocket from his years among people who were less than virtuous. He had used it when doing magic. In fact the last time he had picked someone's pocket, he had actually taken the guard's keys when he and Christophe de Chagny were locked up in gaol. He then put it in de Chagny's pocket so he would be implicated in the theft. It was actually a joke. He did so enjoy seeing de Chagny try to deny it. He would relate the story to Adina at a better time.
Adina said she wished to come with him to talk to Lu. He hesitated for a moment, then said, "Yes, a good idea to come along. Tell me exactly what the picture is inside the locket, so we can describe it. I am sure she has it, but if she gives us trouble, we can prove what it looks like. Does it have a lock of hair or anything else?"
Erik took her hand and they left the dining room and started walking several of the long halls to the marble staircase. The ascended to the next level and the dormitory area. Erik opened the large door at the end of the hall and there were the rooms with names on them. Erik walked slowly down the inner hall, holding Adina's hand. Finally, he stopped in front of one that read, Christine Lucinda Dallas. "I expect that is our Miss Dallas, Adina." He knocked on the door to see if she was there and would answer.

Adina brushed back a lock of her hair and looked up into Erik's mismatched eyes. She gave his hand a tender squeeze before letting go to look for her locket back in the kitchen. Erik's words had made her feel the need to stay alive. Perhaps this was her new purpose; to help Erik with his temper, and maybe he could help her not be so afraid anymore.
"You really believe that the woman took my locket? She seemed a bit…. Well, strange, I suppose. But could she really have taken it?" She sighed again and then placed her hand over her chest, just to be sure. No, it was not around her neck. Oh, she did not want to think that that woman had stolen her most treasured locket, but perhaps she did. Her hand fell to her side as she looked back at the kitchen counter… No, it wasn't there; she thought she had overlooked it but she did not.
She paused and smiled to herself as she remembered the lovely image in her locket. "The picture was of my mother, Marie Gillespie. She is wearing her wedding headdress and the locket I was given after her…." She stopped herself and sighed, wiping away a few stray tears. "Non, there is nothing else in the locket. There used to be an image of my father, but I removed it after I was sent to work here."
Erik hand taken hold her her hand as he escorted her out of the dining room. She liked holding his hand; it was warm and comforting. The two began their ascent put the staircase, making Adina lift up her skirts with her free hand so she would not trip over the hem. They started down the hallway and into the dormitory rooms. She looked up at Erik and nodded when they arrived at the other woman's door. Then he knocked and the maid inhaled deeply… She did not dare to let go of Erik's hand.

Lu had rushed back to her suite with the locket in her pocket. She was interested to take a close look at it to see if it were valuable or not. She closed the door and sat on her bed, after lighting a lamp. She brought the locket close to the lamp and examined it. It was made of silver and seemed very old, but in very good condition, as if it had been well cared for, for many years. She opened it carefully. There was room for two pictures, but only one was there, a miniature portrait of a pretty woman who bore a strong resemblance to Adina. Lu frowned. A relative of Adina? Perhaps her mother?
Suddenly Lu felt a wave of remorse come upon her. The locket wasn't worth much to pawn. She would only get a dollar or two or whatever the money was in the village. She had many things that were worth much more. And the little portrait inside... perhaps it meant something to the woman. She knew it was Adina's for she had seen it become caught in her hair.
Lu had few pretty things when she was a child. A Sunday dress her mother had sewed for her as a young child, with a pretty bonnet. But really no jewellery. That was why she was fascinated by it and being a bit loose-fingered, often pilfered things from unwary souls. She still had the pocket watch and the dagger she had taken from Edouard de Chagny. They were laying on her dresser. She intended to keep those. But this locket, perhaps she should surreptitiously return it to the maid. Perhaps it was really something important to the girl...and the woman's pretty eyes staring out at her from the portrait made her feel uncomfortable. She closed the locket and was about to get ready for bed when there was a knock on her outside door.
She panicked for a moment. Was it the maid looking for her locket? She quickly put the locket in a drawer and went to answer the door, taking a moment to compose herself. Lu opened the door part way and there was the ugly masked man and the maid. "Oh, hullo," she said in her best smile. "How can I he'p you?"

The Dallas woman opened the door when Erik rapped. He glared at her. "I think you have something that belongs to Mademoiselle Gillespie..." His voice was quiet but slightly threatening.
"May we come in?" She stepped out of the way, and to Erik, the western woman looked slightly frightened. He stepped into her suite without waiting for an answer. He paused and looked around the sitting room. "I suspect you found Mademoiselle Gillespie's locket. She wishes to have it back immediately. It has considerable sentimental value to her."
He took a couple more steps into the room, nearing the bedroom door. He glanced through the door and in the flickering glow of the oil lamp, Erik thought he saw something familiar on her dresser. "With your permission, Miss Dallas, I should like to inspect something." He walked past her and into the bedroom. He found his large engraved dagger sitting on her dresser, next to a gold pocket watch. He brought them both out to the sitting room where he lit two gas lights. He knew it was his dagger and he could prove it. He pointed to his initials carved in the hilt. Then he looked at the pocket watch. It was a large one, with a hunter style case, the case closing over the watch face protectively. On the back were engraved initials. A "dC" in large script in the middle with an "R" and an "E" surrounding the larger initials. "Could that "dC" possibly stand for de Chagny and the "R" and "E" for Raoul Edouard? "My dear young lady, next time you pilfer something, you must make sure that initials are not engraved on the item." His voice was sarcastic.
"I had wondered where my dagger was. The last time I remember having it was when I had pulled it out to menace Edouard de Chagny at the pub in the village. I lost track of it then. I had asked him later if he had it and he said no, he seemed to have lost it. He seemed sincere, especially since he said his pocket watch had turned up missing at the same time." He glanced at Lu. "I see we have come to the correct place, n'est-ce pas?"
He gave another hard glance to Lu. "Now, I am sure that you will return the lady's locket with no argument."

Adina looked from Erik to Dallas before stepping towards the woman. "Madam… This locket holds a drawing of my màmà. She died. Giving birth to me, that is. It is the only image I have of her and it means so much to me."
Now she was feeling bad. She stayed outside the room, not wanting to intrude upon the woman's privacy even though she stood her very locket. She watched as Erik pushed his way into the room and looked around. She saw him pick up a dagger and began searching for her stolen locket. The dagger seemed important to him and had the initials 'E.L.' carved into it. She assumed that it belonged to him. All Adina could think about was how she should not have said anything. She hated confrontations and this was the last thing she wanted to do, to confront this woman about her necklace. Her eyes studied the dagger before Erik put it away; it was very beautiful with the his initials carved lovingly into the handle. Then he held up a pocketwatch- most likely belonging to that de Chagny man- and took it with him. It looked like a rather expensive watch; such beautiful etched gold over the cover.
She gave a small gasp when he mentioned that he had used that very dagger to threaten Raoul. It scared her when she saw the long, sheathed blade. She knew that Erik would never use that knife to threaten her, but such a dangerous instrument was still a dangerous and deadly one. Her eyes looked down at the sheath and she gulped, wondering if Erik had ever spilled blood with it; the very thought made her heart tremble but she pushed those thoughts aside… Now he had looked over at Dallas again and asked about her locket. She was beginning to wonder if she really was going to get it back or not.
The maid inhaled then exhaled deeply, her heart no longer shaking but sinking deep in her chest. It now felt as though it were in her stomach than above her breast. All she had wanted was her locket, that's all. A tear dropped from her eyelashes and began to roll down her cheek. She looked from Lenoir to Dallas and took a step closer to the woman. "Please," She implored softly. "That locket is the only thing I have to remember my mother by. I would very much like it back in my possession… Please?"

Lu was not terribly surprised to see Lenoir and Adina at her door. She moved aside when Lenoir asked if they could come in. She had the locket in her pocket and she put her hand in and fingered it. She felt bad when the maid said how much the locket meant to her. And the masked fellow scared her a little. He hadn't before, in the kitchen. But he just barged in her suite. Granted, she had stolen the locket. They must have noticed right after she left. She was getting careless.
Then the masked man went right into her bedroom! Lu stood at the door. She wasn't about to stop him, because he had spotted something on her dresser, the dagger and watch she had lifted from de Chagny. She wondered why Lenoir wanted them, until he came out and looked at them in the glow of the gas lamps. She had wondered what the initials E.L. stood for, until now. She wondered too, why de Chagny had Lenoir's dagger on him. Lenoir answered the question for her half way when he said he had it in the pub. So perhaps de Chagny had taken it from him so he wouldn't hurt anyone while he was drinking. She hadn't' planned to give back the two items stolen from de Chagny, but she had no choice now.
Lu noticed that Adina gave a gasp when Lenoir said he had threatened de Chagny. She wondered if he were a killer. Moreover, she wondered if Lenoir's girlfriend here, the maid, knew anything about him. She seemed surprised that he would have such a dangerous looking weapon. Lu liked the looks of the weapon, it was shiny, engraved and looked very dangerous. She liked the dagger much more than its owner.
Then Lenoir said, Now, I am sure that you will return the lady's locket with no argument. For some odd reason, she had a compulsion to obey him, even thought she didn't want to. He was looking at her with those strange eyes of his. They entranced her, even as she wondered why they were different colours.
Lu giggled nervously and stepped from one foot to the other. She was going to have to admit she had taken the locket, there was no way around it. She smiled and dug in her pocket. "This the locket?" she asked innocently, holding the very item. "Thought somebody musta left it in the kitchen, so I put it in my pocket. Glad to find the owner, Miss." She handed the locket back to Adina.
Then she glanced at the little maid. She was sorry. The lady seemed nice and it seemed like she must be rather poor, not having anything from her family but her locket. She actually was glad she had given it back.

The maid's eyes lit up and her heart swelled when Lu held out her locket. She lifted her shaking hands to the necklace and took it, holding it close to her breast. Tears welled up in her eyes as she opened the oval cover of the necklace to look at the portrait of her mother. A gentle smile tugged at the corners of her lips as she closed the locket and tied it once more around her neck. She felt much more at ease now that the trinket was safely back in her possession once more. She looked up at the woman and politely curtsied.
"Thank-you, madam," She said to Lu as she wiped away her tears. "You do not know how much this locket means to me. It is so dear to my heart and I am pleased to have it back. Thank-you again. If there is anything you ever need, madam, please do not hesitate to ask me."
Adina reached out and took Lenoir's arm in her hand as if to feel comfort. And she did. She looked at Lu and smiled at her. Perhaps she was poor like herself and did not have many nice things in her life. Maybe that was why she had taken Adina's locket. The young woman looked back at Lenoir's blade; it did not frighten her as much now. If fact, she was looking at the engravings upon the scabbard. They were so intricate, unlike anything she had seen in her time. It was actually quite beautiful; perhaps that was why the woman had taken it.
"Well," She started, inhaling deeply before exhaling with a smile. "Under other such circumstances, I would not have been so gracious upon accepting back my locket. But I see now that it was an honest mistake." She only wanted to see the best in people. She did not quite understand the woman too well with her strange accent. It did not sound European; perhaps she was from America? And if so, was she also someone else trapped here in the manor as well?

Erik knew the girl would give the locket back to Adina. He had mesmerized her with his eyes this time. His singing voice was even more potent in mesmerizing young ladies as he had discovered, and his strange eyes could do the same, although not quite as well...but well enough for this situation. He was satisfied when Lu gave back the locket. He was very touched when he saw how much it meant to her. She seemed moved to tears to have it returned. The Dallas girl on the other hand, he couldn't completely figure out. She seemed a bit afraid of him until he had enthralled her with his eyes and then she readily gave back the necklace. But why had she stolen it in the first place? Surely she knew who it belonged to and that he and Adina would discover it was gone and know who had taken it... He didn't understand that. He was an excellent pickpocket himself, having learned that, along with other magician's tricks long ago. But he only used it when there was a need or, as when Christophe de Chagny and he had been confined in gaol, a reason to play a joke on an enemy or get them in trouble. But he would never have taken something from an innocent person. Adina was so polite she even curtsied and thanked Lu profusely for returning it. She offered her help to Lu if there were anything she needed. Erik thought the girl looked a bit ashamed. Well, she should. She caused pain to a sweet girl who had not done anyone any harm whatsoever.
Erik saw Adina looking at the dagger in its scabbard. He pulled it out so both ladies could view it. The blade itself was also engraved beautifully. Erik looked at Lu, then took his finger and rubbed it against the sharp side of the dagger, slowly, very slowly. It was a warning. He glanced at Lu again. "This dagger never hurts anyone...unless they are quite deserving...." His voice had a hard, almost frightening edge to it. Then he smiled urbanely. "I trust you understand my meaning, Miss Dallas."
Erik wondered for a moment, why was this woman here? Then he remembered. Her first name was Christine...Christine Dallas...somewhat similar to Christine Daaé...She must be another Christine, but very different from the ones already here...did she have an Erik or a Raoul here with her too? Or might they be coming? He decided not to get into that discussion, perhaps another time. Her English was so bad, he longed to teach her how to speak properly. Even though his native language was French, he spoke English almost perfectly and knew its grammar and syntax as well as his native language. Certainly better than this woman. Her uncouth voice and horrendous grammar grated on his nerves.

Lu was strangely fascinated by this fellow. Before he came into her suite, she had thought him simply a singularly ugly fellow, odd and strangely clad in formal clothing and a mask of all things. But suddenly, since looking into his mismatched eyes, she had become somewhat entranced with him ... in only a moment's time. His eyes caught hers in his gaze and he demanded, in the oddest, and most polite way, that she return the locket to the maid. And of course she did.
Then he did something else very strange and suddenly she was frightened again and released from the trance. Lenoir pulled out the dagger and began to caress its sharp edge as gently as if it were a woman's hair. It pulled Lu out of her mesmerized state and she felt oddly disturbed. He made a veiled threat, his voice quiet, but with a menacing edge to it. Lu had hardly ever been afraid of anyone, yet, this fellow scared her. It was likely because she couldn't figure him out and had never met anyone quite as strange and menacing as this man. Sure, Gunner was a little different because of the bottom half of his face being bereft of flesh, but that was only skin deep. And there had been a few men that had challenged her father and the ranch hands, but Lu had never been afraid. When she was old enough she had joined them with her rifle in driving them away. This fellow...his threatening yet cajoling voice...he gave her the creeps.
She liked the little maid. She had been sweet to be so gracious. Lu determined she would not take anything from anyone she knew and liked at the mansion. It was hard, because Lu was quite loose-fingered. If she saw something she liked, chances are, it would be in her pocket in short order. But she had to try harder. She still was waiting to talk to Gunner about some of the larger things in the halls. She expected no one owned the house, or so she thought, so no one would care if she took any of the valuables. But that was a question for later.
Lu inched toward the door, hoping the masked man and his companion would hightail it out of her suite and she could go to bed. She pulled the door open wider as a hint for them to leave.

Adina smiled and enjoyed the feel of the gentle weight of the locket around her neck once more. It was not a hard or painful weight, but one that she enjoyed. It was a comfort to her, almost as if it were her mother's very hand upon her should as she watched her from heaven.
The maid felt a sharp tug at her stomach when she saw Erik almost bluntly threaten the woman. She looked back at Lu and saw that she was indeed intimidated and nervous by Erik's threat and the way he caressed the blade. She visibly shuddered and reached out to gently touch his hand, the one touching the knife's edge. "Erik," She pleaded softly, her eyes looking up into his. "Perhaps madam is- how do you say?- 'tuckered out'? I believe we should let her be so that she can rest well this evening. It is rather cold tonight and she should stay warm in her room."
She gave Lenoir's arm a gentle tug as if to persuade him to follow her back downstairs. "Erik? C'est vous plait?" She looked back into his eyes, hoping her doe-like, mossy eyes would sooth him and make him put away the knife to join her back downstairs. She turned her eyes back to look at the woman as if to say she was sorry for how Lenoir had acted towards her. She turned her attention back to the knife; she hoped that he would put it away, it did frighten her so. Her hand reached out again and touched the hilt of the knife… It was cold and deeply engraved, her fingers tracing over the design before pulling away from it. She moved her hand back to her chest, curling her fingers around her locket. She shook her head to try and rid her mind of the frightful- yet subtle- way Erik had threatened Lu. Her heart jumped a little but she brushed it off as a response to the cold that now settling over the manor. It was growing darker outside and so cold. But she looked out towards a window on the far side of the dormitories more closely and saw… It was snowing! She smiled a bit and felt much more soothed by the lovely sight.
"Erik? Could we go outside to see the first snowfall of the season?" She asked, her eyes alight with renewed joy. She felt so happy, like a child who begged her parents to buy them a special toy for Christmas. "I do love snow very much. Oh, please, Erik, can we go see?"
